"In 2023 Sandra Kyle went to India to distribute funds she had raised for street animals there. Quakers also contributed a sizeable donation to help her, for which she was very grateful. Street animals in India are amongst the most unfortunate in the world, and Sandra has a long association with India.

She has just written a book about her voyage, called 'PAWPRINTS ON MY HEART, A New Zealand Woman's Journey To Help Street Animals In India,' and mentions Quakers in her book.

In October it will have its official launch in the Whanganui Library, and Sandra can sign the print copy on that occasion for anyone who would like to buy one. Here is the link to buy it, that includes a description and an author profile.

Online Discernment Workshop

August 12 to September 16 2025

Sessions run weekly, 7.15 to 8.45pm, Online Only.

Facilitators: Anne Hall, Alistair Hall, Linley Gregory

We invite you to join with us in exploring Quaker discernment processes.

What is discernment?
What does Quaker discernment involve?
How did these processes arise historically?
How do personal and corporate discernment processes differ?
What helps our discernment process work well?
What is the role of the Clerk, and all the rest of us, in a Meeting for Worship for Business?

Both our “Quaker Handbook” and “On these Islands” will be used as background material. We hope the sessions will be fun, informative, and thought-provoking for all.

Session One (12 Aug): Introduction: what is discernment?

Session Two (19 Aug): Historical Background

Session Three (26 Aug): Personal and corporate discernment

Session Four (2 Sept): Our business process: Stages along the way

Session Five (9 Sept): Our business process: Personal responsibilities

Session Six (16 Sept): Recap and Reflections

Registration: To register for these sessions, please email [email protected] by August 9th 2025 and you will be sent the Zoom link.

Payment: There is no charge for these sessions, but we encourage you to make a donation towards the cost of the website redevelopment, to the YM Bank Account (details available from the organisers)

We have sent our condolences following the news of the passing of Pope Francis.

He reached out to Quakers on issues of common cause, including peace in Israel-Palestine and climate justice.

The differences between Quakerism and Catholicism are many, but the point in peace making is to speak across divides.

We appreciate his ministry of reform and reconciliation as well as his bold decision to point out the failings of capitalism.

Whoever we are we can all take inspiration to do what we can from where we are to try to make the world more just and peaceful.
