St Barnabas, Roseneath

St Barnabas, Roseneath St Barnabas is a small, vibrant church in Roseneath, Wellington. We are one of the few Anglo-Catholic churches in New Zealand.

We are a member of Diverse Church and an active supporter of the Living Wage Movement. Our service is centered around the Mass, and is both reverent and joyous. We have a small choir, (run by Mark Dorrell of the Orpheus Choir), and an excellent children's program with enthusiastic entertainers that runs the length of the service. There is wine and filter coffee and nibbles for morning tea after th

e service, in a hall with a lovely view of the harbour. We smell like fine incense, are located directly opposite a No.14 bus stop, and would love to meet you.

Last Saturday, St Barnabas rang in the Easter season with the Easter Vigil. The classic Exsultet was sung, the Paschal candle was lit and Easter was literally rung in with an almighty fanfare and bells for the Gloria. Three other priests (!) co-presided alongside Rev Cath.

EASTER VIGIL LIVESTREAM
-
With Easter fast approaching, St Barnabas is aiming to make its Paschal celebrations as accessible as possible. As of now, our Masses are livestreamed on Zoom. For our Easter Vigil, arguably the most important Mass of the year, we’ve decided to stream it live on YouTube! This means that anyone from around the world can tune in live or after the Mass to watch our liturgy. Below is a link to the YouTube livestream, which will go live just before 7:30pm on Saturday, 4 April.

Last Sunday, St Barnabas celebrated Palm Sunday with an outdoor procession and an All-Age Mass. Our Children’s Minister, Olivia Knox, preached an interactive sermon that, although aimed at younger people, asked deep questions of us all. Rev Cath Growcott presided over our famous Sung Eucharist, simplified for the benefit of our children.

ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ENTHRONED
-
Early this morning, Dame Sarah Mullally was enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury upon the Chair of St Augustine in Canterbury Cathedral. The 108th Archbishop of Canterbury, ++Sarah is the first woman to serve in the role. We give thanks for her ministry and pray for guidance as she guides the Anglican Communion into the future.
-
God of majesty and wonder, like the woman Mary who brought forth your Son into this world, and the women whom you called to be the first witnesses of his resurrection, may your servant Sarah, whom you have called by your Spirit to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury, be ever blessed and courageous, and by your Grace herald among us new life and new light – through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

HOLY WEEK / TE WIKI TAPU - MARCH AND APRIL 2026
-
Holy Week marks the seven day period leading up to Easter. The week begins with the commemoration of Christ’s triumphal entry in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. On Maundy Thursday, we observe the Washing of the Feet and the Last Supper. The Passion of the Lord is recognised on Good Friday and his resurrection commemorated at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. The week finishes on Easter Sunday.

St Barnabas will observe Holy Week with a variety of different services throughout the seven day period. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!
-
Most merciful God, by the passion of your Son Jesus Christ, you delivered us from the power of darkness; grant that through faith in him who suffered on the cross we may be found acceptable in your sight – through our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS / NGĀ KŌHUNGAHUNGA TAPU - 15 FEBRUARY 2026
-
Last Sunday, we were privileged to have the Venerable Stephen King preach and preside over our Sung Mass to commemorate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Fr Stephen was Vicar of St Barnabas for a number of years and is now one of the co-Vicars at St Peter’s on Willis.

The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia is unique in many ways, the alternative date for the Feast of the Holy Innocents being just one example. Why does our province have an alternative date for Holy Innocents in February? If you know why, perhaps leave us a comment!

ASH WEDNESDAY / TE WENEREI PUNGAREHU - 18 FEBRUARY 2026
-
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten period. During this time, we reflect upon the sacrifice of Jesus Christ through prayer, almsgiving, and traditionally, fasting. On Ash Wednesday, ashes from Palm Sunday last year are distributed amongst the congregation on their foreheads in the shape of a cross.

St Barnabas will observe this holy day with a Sung Mass with the Imposition of Ashes at 6pm on Wednesday, 18 February 2026. All are welcome!
-
God of the desert, as we follow Jesus into the unknown, may we recognise the tempter when he comes; let it be your bread we eat, your world we serve and you alone we worship. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
