Today was our last service at Wadestown Presbyterian Church. We are grateful to all those who have walked the journey with us these past few months as we have made the difficult decision to close. Especially our friend Rev Kay Webster, who led us through these last weeks. Kay has asked for the following to be posted. Manaakitia me te aroha.

From Kay Webster
This prayer has been on my mind, and wonder, if on this day, whether it is a gift for you all.

Lord,
it is night.

The night is for stillness.
Let us be still in the presence of God.

It is night after a long day.
What has been done has been done;
what has not been done has not been done;
let it be.

The night is dark.
Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives
rest in you.

The night is quiet.
Let the quietness of your peace enfold us,
all dear to us,
and all who have no peace.

The night heralds the dawn.
Let us look expectantly to a new day,
new joys,
new possibilities.

In your name we pray.
Amen.
Every blessing, Kay W

Wadestown Presbyterian Church has made the difficult and sad decision to close in late March 2023.
Before we do this we need to celebrate our long and amazing history from our formation in 1881, to date.
Over the weekend of Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March we have a range of events planned.

Dear friends- some news:

WPC members have agreed that we'll work towards closing the parish.
While our worship services and fellowship are wonderful, continuing as an independent parish is becoming too much, and we don't think we are sustainable for much longer. This is just the start of a formal process that will take until early 2023.

For now we're looking forward to our special Carols and Readings service on Sunday 11 December, and our other Christmas services this month. We’ll have some shared services over the holidays, then back to regular services at WPC from 29 January.

We're feeling a bit sad, and also excited about what might lie ahead.

IF you would like to know more, or to talk about this some more please send us a message. There are caring people who are happy to talk.

Kia ora everyone. We have a funeral at WPC on Monday morning, at 11am. We need the parking immediately outside the church on Hanover Street for the hearse, also the parking outside the church on Wadestown Road for the family. If those lovely folk who park there during the week could park elsewhere for this time we would be very grateful - and so would the family. Blessings.

Last Sunday's Service - 23 October
Brett Reid came to lead us in worship once again. (Thanks Brett) He began by saying: With bumps and bruises, spots, marks, and scars, from a life lived well, or not at all, God invites you simply to come!
He explored the story of the self-righteous Pharisee and the humble taxman slumping in the shadows, and how easy it is to slip from one camp to the other .
Jesus commented, ā€œThis tax man, not the other, went home made right with God. If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face, but if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.ā€

And Suni prayed a marvellous prayer for us (thanks Suni):
God of love and light, we thank you for the abundance of warmth and sunshine this weekend.
We pour out our darkness into the welcoming, forgiving light.
We bring to the surface buried feelings, fears and doubts and unresolved paradoxical emotions.
We hold it up to your light ad pray that you heal us as individuals, peoples and the whole creation….
We thank you God that in you our every need is met. Reveal within us the things that will make us whole and send us out into the world to be agents of your healing and peace.
May your kingdom come. Amen

Church this week - 30 October

We have a new face up front: Rev David Douglas from up the coast. Please be there at 9.50am all bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready for some good time together.

Invitation
Wadestown Presbyterian Church is at a turning point.
If you have an interest in the future of this community church you are invited to a conversation after worship on Sunday 30th October 2022 about the future of WPC.

What sort of conversation…?
This is an exploratory conversation, to consider the way forward.
The conversation will be facilitated by Paul Ramsay, who has recently been in discussion with Parish Council, and is assisting the Ministry Settlement Board explore the way forward for WPC.

There will be two main issues for consideration:
1. Where WPC is at
2. Options for the future

Where WPC is at
In analysing the relevant factors, the Parish Council and the Ministry Settlement Board are questioning the sustainability of the parish.
The most significant issues of sustainability are people resources –
* The many tasks needed to keep a parish running fall upon a small number of people who are stretched.
* The departure of Rev Donald Gordon, and no Minister currently leading
* Some who serve in key parish council roles have indicated they wish to step down or can’t continue to carry the load indefinitely. These include Parish Clerk, Treasurer and Worship Co-ordinator. There aren't many people willing to step into roles like these.

Options for the future
If sustainability is uncertain, what are the options?
Broadly, there are four options:
* Continuation
* Co-operation (shared ministry and resources)
* Amalgamation (combining on a single site or developing a multi-site model)
* Dissolution.

What do you think? Do you have something to contribute? Or ideas to share? How can we be creative and do things in a new way?

The future is uncertain, but we know we are not alone. We journey with God, who guides and provides for us in the different places we find ourselves. And we have the support and prayer of the wider church on this journey with us – whatever we decide.
Our faith will continue. We might practice it in new ways, but this might also be an opportunity for spiritual growth.

Rev Kay was our welcome guest for Communion on Sunday, and we had a memorable reminder of the importance of gratitude. In the familiar story of the twelve ā€˜lepers’ who were healed, only one came came back to thank Jesus, and he was a Samaritan, not one of God’s chosen!
And we have some homework: to think of the many things for which we can give thanks, to write each one down and save them in a suitable container. So whose jar is overflowing?
