Here's a reflection by Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand and Nathaniel Centre on Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si', which turned 10 years this year.

To mark 10 years since the publication of Pope Francis' landmark encyclical, Laudato Si', Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand and The Nathaniel Centre for Bioethics — Te Kupenga have prepared a reflection reminding people of the critical themes of that document and of the ongoing urgency to take up Pope Francis' call for an ecological conversion.

A document has been developed by the InterChurch Bioethics Council and the Nathaniel Centre for Bioethics on the complex issue of gene technology. This was produced to help people consider the benefits and the risks of such technology. The document is intended to be useful for any assessment of the issue but takes on additional significance as the New Zealand Parliament considers changes to legislation.

INFINITE DIGNITY = INFINITE LOVE = CARE OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES

Migrants' lives are put at risk because they no longer have the means to start a family, to work or to feed themselves. On arriving in countries that should be able to accept them, migrants are not seen as entitled like others to participate in the life of society. [Dignitas Infinita, paragraph 40]

INFINITE HUMAN DIGNITY ALWAYS PREVAILS

Dignitas Infinita reaffirms the Church’s ancient stance that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and therefore possesses an infinite dignity which prevails in and beyond every circumstance, state, or situation the person may ever encounter.

We cannot separate faith from the defense of human dignity

The wellspring of human dignity is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The infinite dignity all humans possess calls us to work tirelessly for justice for the weak and needy, the poor and afflicted, the vulnerable, the most insignificant, the marginalised and those downtrodden by the powerful.

WE CANNOT SEPARATE FAITH FROM THE DEFENSE OF HUMAN DIGNITY

The wellspring of human dignity is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
