Zenz Wellington is the Wellington branch of the Zen Institute of New Zealand: a national, non-residential Zen Buddhist training organisation that provides Zen training and guidance to those interested in practicing Zen Buddhism. Members meet regularly for zazen (Zen meditation), intensive meditation retreats ("sesshin") and other activities throughout the country. We offer Zen meditation each Mond

ay evening at 7:00 PM at the conference centre of St Andrew's on the Terrace in central Wellington. The type of meditation we practise is called "zazen". It is a type of meditation that functions as the very heart of Zen practice. Zazen is a powerful tool of self-inquiry, boundless in its scope and ability to reveal the true basis of reality. Through zazen, we realize the unity of the self with the ten thousand things (everything) . The practice has the potential to transform our lives and those of others.

This is a wonderful talk by Danica Shoan Ankele who is a Senior monastic and Dharma holder at Zen Mountain Monastery in the USA. She has been practicing for over 20 years.
Her wish to visit Soto Zen monasteries in Japan was granted by Shugen Roshi and she spent 6 weeks there. In this talk she recounts her deeply affecting experiences.

Hi everyone. We’ll be doing a memorial service for Thomas Murray, who passed away last week, at the start of tomorrow night’s programme, so will adjust the timing of our meditation periods to accommodate this.

There’s still time to sign up for this amazing opportunity!

Under Level 2 precautions against Covid, we do not meet for zazen. Breathing together in a small room for two hours seems unwise under the circumstances.

So no sitting on March 1st! Looking forward to seeing everyone again on March 8th, when we shall listen to the talk by John Daido Loori Roshi which had been planned for March 1st.

Take care out there!

We shall post regarding future events as the situation evolves.

Tonight t 7:00 pm, Monday 2nd November, after a first period of meditation and a short walking meditation, we shall listen to a recently recorded talk by the Abbott of the Mountains and Rivers Order, Shugen Roshi.

This talk is about the Verse of the Kesa, which is chanted by Zen practitioners every morning, around the world:

Vast is the robe of liberation
A formless field of benefaction
I wear the Tathagata's teaching
Saving all sentient beings.

Referencing the words of the great Master Dogen, Shugen Roshi addresses this verse and its implications for all Mahayana Buddhists.

As he says in the talk, we are all fully capable of engaging this path, just as we are, using just what is available to us, in our own time and place.
