Grace at Wellington We are the Wellington congregation of the Grace Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

Psalm 45 is a wedding song for royalty, praising the king, calling of the new queen, and anticipating the future. But why do we have it in our Scriptures? Why read or sing it in our services? Because the wedding song points forward to the best wedding ever, that of King Jesus and his beautiful bride, the Church.

Times of distress come on individuals (as we saw in Psalms 42 and 43), and they come on groups like countries and the Church. Psalm 44 is a corporate psalm, sung to God and asking him to step in again for his Covenant People. The psalm speaks of God’s past saving acts, weeps for present defeat, and calls on God as Warrior to save. Looking back to the Cross, we can see how God did answer that prayer in Jesus Christ, and will answer it for us when Jesus returns.

We too at times feel that same longing for God. Our devotional life can feel dry. Worship can feel like routine. God feels distant to us and to our struggles. Past days of pleasure in God’s presence can feel depressing rather than encouraging. Yet despite these feelings, we can still hope in God, because God’s goodness to us is based on his nature, not our feelings.

In Nehemiah 12, the completed walls of Jerusalem are dedicated, accompanied by worship and giving. This passage, which sees an external object purified for God’s mission, reminds us of the importance of being purified on the inside if we are to be made useful for God’s mission. It also reminds us that it is good and right to give thanks to God with song and instrument for his purification of us through Jesus Christ, and to give from what we have for his worship too.
