The Focolare Movement has the features of a large and varied family, of a “new people born of the Gospel”, as Chiara Lubich, its founder, defined it. It is a movement of spiritual and social renewal, founded in Trent, Italy, in 1943, during the Second World War. The Focolare Movement, officially known as the Work of Mary, was approved by the Catholic Church in 1962. It is now present in 182 nation

s and more than 2 million people share closely in its life and work. Inspired by Jesus’ prayer to the Father, “May they all be one” (Jn 17:21), its goal is to promote brotherhood and to achieve a more united world in which people respect and value diversity. To achieve this goal, people of the Movement engage in various forms of dialogue and are committed to building bridges of fraternal relationships among individuals, between cultural groups and in every area of society. Members of the Movement include Christians of different Churches and ecclesial communities, members of the major world religions and people of no particular religious belief. Each one adheres to the Movement’s goal and spirit, while faithfully following the precepts of their own faith and conscience.

Let go of pride

“Let us serve everyone and serve them well.

May God help us to astound the world, which is so full of pride and hungry for power,

by our Christian attitude of selfless service.

Then Christ will be more easily understood and the effects of the Gospel revolution will shine out brightly.”

Do not be indifferent.

“God considers what you do to your neighbour as being done to him.
So, be humble before your neighbours and serve them.
Do not be indifferent to them, (…).
Love them, by serving them, even at the cost of giving in, or losing.”

Chiara Lubich, Servant of God

In accordance with the General Statutes, they, together with the President and the Co-President, are responsible for representing the entire Movement and expressing its unity.

They will be called upon to carry out the tasks entrusted to them by the President, in particular overseeing the practical aspects of the life of the Movement (summarised in the “seven colours”) and the support of the geographical subdivisions (the “zones”). Each one, in their own role, will have at heart the unity of the entire family of the Focolare Movement, safeguarding and promoting it at every step.
They take up their positions today after receiving two-thirds of the votes from those eligible to vote and will remain in office for five years.
