Services on Sunday Cancelled

Dear friends

Cyclone Vaianu is forecast to make landfall in the early hours of Sunday morning. As you will have seen, the Met Service has issued multiple warnings regarding heavy rain and wind. These warnings cover all our area.

In order to keep all our parishioners safe, we have taken the decision to cancel the services in the parish on Sunday.
We feel it is important that we act with an abundance of caution hence this decision.

Take care, everybody, and please pray for first responders and emergency workers who will be in action around the country.

Update on St Leonard's Church

Greetings and merry Christmas to all our neighbours and friends in Matakana and the surrounding district. Please feel welcome to join us for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services next week.

As you may have noticed, we have been making some improvements to our site recently, with the little cabin being taken away to open up the courtyard again, a lovely new canopy being installed at the back of the OpShop and a big tidy-up of our grounds after a recent working bee.

Reluctantly, there is another, more significant change happening too, with the removal this week of the large exotic tree in the centre of our site. It's been there many years and provided a lot of welcome shade for visitors but unfortunately it now has a huge root system which is literally undermining the foundations of our heritage church and threatening our pressurised sewerage system.

The engineering advice we've received has been to remove it so, after much deliberation, we have accepted that it is the right decision.

We'll then be able to fix up the major slumping of the floor in our much-loved old church and get on with some new landscaping for the rear of our site, with the repositioning of our well-used bench seat and some new native plants.

We're sorry to see the old tree go but we're looking forward to the next phase of ensuring the Matakana church site is an attractive and welcoming part of our local community.
