🐧 Please read this in case you ever find a kororā (little penguin) on the beach during the day.

If you see a kororā out in the open during daylight, it’s not normal. They should be out at sea, or if on land, hidden under cover.

A penguin visible on the beach during the day is very likely sick, injured, starving, or in distress.

Sadly, we’re seeing a lot of these cases at the moment, and just as sadly, there’s a lot of misinformation about what to do. Here’s the correct advice for the Western Bay of Plenty:

📞 If you can’t get through:
Call ARRC Wildlife Trust on 07 579 9115
Or after hours, call DOC Emergency Hotline: 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468)

Keep people and dogs well away to reduce stress and prevent attacks.

Stay calm and quiet around the bird and follow all instructions given.

Without rescue, sick, injured, or starving kororā are unlikely to survive and are at serious risk from predators and dogs. Quick, calm action can save their life 💙
