Who are we?
The Wellington New Zealand Stake is the local church organisation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Wellington area. Organised on 30 August 1965, the Stake (a geographic unit similar to an archdiocese) is currently led by President Peter Thomson (President), President Janryll Fernandez (first counselor) and President Craig Pomare (second counselor).
Wellington Stake is made up of five congregations - Hataitai Ward (Samoan), Wellington Ward, Tawa Ward, Wainiomata Ward and Harbour Ward (Petone).
From a few hundred members 50 years ago, the Church has grown in the Wellington region with members now in congregations reaching as far as Masterton in the east to Paraparaumu in the west. There are now separate stakes in Porirua and Upper Hutt.
Wellington has an important part in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand as the first baptism in the country took place in Wellington's Karori stream over 160 years ago.
