Back in August 2025, we shared news of investigations into restoring our finials to their rightful place atop the church and this week, that work is finally underway.

The team from Hadlee and Brunton are on site, and although it's been quite a treat to see one of these impressive finials up close, it will be even better to see it back where it belongs and looking brand new.

Today’s work includes the reinstatement of the replacement finial, made to replace the original which was lost during severe winds some years ago. Interestingly, the area where the finial has been missing is also one of the sections where leaks had been occurring inside the church.

Both finials on the south side will now be replaced together so they are in matching condition and, hopefully, will stand strong for many years to come.

Ben Randall was farewelled from St Mary’s today, marking the end of his six years of service as Vicar of St Mary’s and, more recently, Archdeacon of South Canterbury.

Ben completed his final official services at the church before being celebrated at a heartfelt luncheon in the hall.

During the gathering he was presented with a beautiful artwork piece by Debbie Templeton-Page. The piece was gifted by parishioners as a lasting tribute and token of appreciation.

Ben will be greatly missed, and we wish him all the very best as he returns to Christchurch.
