On the 6th - 9th May 2026. Natives Sports Performance led the Fire Project cabin build wānanga at Te Hiku o Te Ika Marae - Te Hapua, (Ko Te Reo Mihi te Whare nui). 30 wahine were selected to join and learn the skills to build a new whare to be gifted to the Marae. It was an honour and privilege for all of those that participated. The manaaki, the kai and care from the haukainga was beautiful from start to finish.
At the pōwhiri on 6th May, the taumata shared the connection of Te Haahi Rātana and the naming of the whare throughout Te Hāpua.
- Te Reo Pōwhiri | Our Temple
- Te Reo Mihi | Our Wharenui
- Te Reo Manaaki | Our Wharekai
- Te Reo Aroha | The old kaumatua and kuia flats
- Te Reo Whareora | The Clinic
- Te Reo Tautoko | The Church shed for our Pou
The fire project roopu, name the whare once it is completed. Te Reo o te Ahi was given as a hōnonga to the fire project and a representation of the fire and passion that this kaupapa ignited amongst not just the builders, tutors but the hāpouri of Te Hāpua. The use of Ahi is also a connection to Ahikaa.
The blessing of the building was held at 6.45pm Friday 8th May and was conducted by our Pou o te Haahi, no te pāriha o Te Hāpua. Our Pou shared later that this name is one of the most biblical names out of all names in Te Hāpua. The "voice of the fire" representing a direct powerful encounter with Ihoa, most notably at Mount Sinai, where the Israelites heard God's voice from the midst of the flames.
It is important to share the kupu that we use in Te Hāpua for fire is kāpura. However, this name rings true for us also.
We are just placing this korero here for a record of this new whare and the origin's of this name for future generations. Ngā mihi nūnui ki a Native Sports Performance, it is rare for people to want to venture this far north and provide opportunities like this we are grateful for you all.
