If God can speak through a donkey, he can speak through you. In this message from Acts 2, Phil Brown traces how rare the Spirit’s voice was in the Old Testament, from Balaam’s talking donkey to Moses longing for all God’s people to be prophets, and shows how everything changed at Pentecost. With a roaring wind and tongues of fire, God poured out his Spirit on all people. We no longer need to cast lots to find God’s will, because his Spirit lives in us. Phil explains prophecy as simply speaking God’s truth into someone’s life to strengthen, encourage and comfort them. He reminds us that we need both the cross of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit to go out on mission.

Most of us aren’t good at waiting. But before Jesus sent his disciples out, he told them to stay put until they’d received what the Father had promised.

Kayla opens our new series, The Spirit and Mission, in Acts 1:4–8 and Luke 24. She looks at why Jesus wouldn’t let the disciples go until they’d been filled, and what the parable of the ten bridesmaids tells us about the oil. She also explains the “power” Jesus promised: it isn’t something we work up ourselves. It’s God’s Spirit put on us like clothing, so we can be his witnesses.

The church isn’t sent out in its own strength. God fills us with the Holy Spirit so the world would come to know Jesus.
