Faith, our walk with Jesus and the love that connects it

Have you ever wondered what faith is, where our faith comes from and why we have a faith?

Is faith a guarantee, or do we live faithfully in hope?
· Do you have faith that a relationship with friends will last?
· Do you have faith your car will start in the morning?
· Do you have faith that your wages will go in the bank on time?

Having hope that your car will start, your friends won’t abandon you, or your income will arrive on time are fundamental things that cannot be guaranteed.
Faith in Jesus Christ and the path he has for us is the only way to everlasting life and the glories of heaven promised through his word.
The Bible guarantees everlasting life as a gift of God’s grace, received solely through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not earned by human effort, but secured by Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection.
Everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16)
Once we have faith in Jesus, we need to learn to follow his path for us. This is often difficult and can take us in directions we are uncertain of, but with the unrelenting love Jesus brings and the power of his word, we will thrive like Daffodils in the spring sun as we are guided through our journey.
For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. (James 1 23:24)

It was a blessing to be part of Matthew and Kelly's baptism on Pentecost Sunday and so inspiring to hear their testimonies.
May God continue to guide, strengthen and bless them in the years ahead.

THE Mystery

“The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 NLT) Coming to faith is a Spirit facilitated event that is beyond our understanding. “And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.” (Ephesians 1:13b NLT)
This spiritual life the Holy Spirit brought about in us includes being reconnected with God, having the ability to love and live fruitful lives, and having the exciting prospect of eternal life. Being part of this spiritual life connects us with others who experienced the same transformation – the Body of Christ. We are living in a new reality. We are living up to the high spiritual standing we have in Christ. We are people whom God transforms by changing the way we think so that we know what God finds good, pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2)
On top of the mystery of our spiritual birth, we experience the mystery that
God gives us so much agency. We can decide the impact the Holy Spirit has on us. “Those who live as their human nature tells them to, have their minds controlled by what human nature wants. Those who live as the Spirit tells them to, have their minds controlled by what the Spirit wants.” (Romans 8:5 GNB)
“Holy Spirit, thank you for our faith and for guiding us as we express our faith. Help us to be spiritually strong as we honour God and follow Jesus. Amen.”

Being a good referee

From time to time, I am asked to be someone’s referee for a job application. The prospective employer will then contact me and ask me about the applicant’s character, skillset, and what they might bring to the role they applied for. The people asking you to be their referee hopes that you will promote them in a way that lands them the job. To be a referee you need to know the person well and their need to be a relationship of trust between you.
Jesus said to his friends they will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be his referees (witnesses) (Acts 1:8). For us to be Jesus’ referees, we “must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.” (1 Peter 3:15 NLT) To enthusiastically tell people about Jesus we need to know Jesus well and have a trust-based relationship with Him. What would you tell someone who asks about who Jesus is, what He has done, and what difference a relationship with Jesus will make?

Not always easy!

John tells of Jesus’ concern for the well-being of his mother just before He died. (John 19:26-28) But sadly the separation between adult children and elderly parents, often referred to as family estrangement or intergenerational, "no-contact" estrangement, is a growing, often hidden, social phenomenon characterized by the intentional breaking of ties. While family is traditionally expected to be close, research suggests that 1 in 10 older mothers experience estrangement from at least one adult child. This phenomenon is increasingly viewed by adult children as an act of "self-preservation" or an "empowered exit" to escape toxic, controlling, or abusive dynamics, rather than an impulsive decision. This simplistic one-sided argument is not helpful. There is a complex web of factors that contribute to this unfortunate and very sad situation for which both parents and children need to take responsibility.
Our guidelines are for children to honour and obey their parents (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3) and for parents not to treat their children in ways that would embitter, discourage or aggravate them (Colossians 3:21; Ephesians 6:4).
Jesus also warns us not to use self-righteous sounding arguments to dodge our responsibilities. (Matthew 15:4-6)
May our relationships with our parents and our children, however complex and difficult they may become, always be marked by love and grace.
