Anglican Parish of Gate Pa

Anglican Parish of Gate Pa Anglican Parish, Diocese of Waiapu, Tauranga Sunday worship services
• 8.30 - Eucharist. Please wear a face mask. Tuesday - 9.30am short Eucharist.

Please wear a face mask (no hymns)
• 10 am - Family Eucharist with hymns, followed by morning tea and fellowship. We are on the historic battle site of Pukehinahina/Gate Pā, which was fought on 29 April 1864. This part of our story calls us to a mission of reconciliation. We are welcoming of everyone who walks through our door – above our door the words are written “All who enter here be reconcil

ed”. We believe in the principles of justice, social equality and human rights, and we seek to be present to and with our community. Our church is a space for people to explore and express their faith, and within our sanctuary is a deep sense of the sacred and peaceful presence. Our services are based on the Anglican liturgy in the New Zealand Prayer Book, with a mixture of traditional and contemporary hymns. We welcome people of all ages and offer children's activities. We celebrate the major festivals of the Christian year. We offer this space and our liturgical worship to provide different ways people can connect with God in and celebrate the mystery of God

Our story:
The first Anglican Church in Gate Pā was built in 1900, and was a daughter church of Holy Trinity Tauranga for many years. We became an independent parish when our first vicar, Reverend C.D.R. Stevens, was inducted in 1962. In 1992 the church experienced a significant fire, which resulted in our current building being erected in 1993. Today we are a parish made up of mainly Pākehā New Zealanders with some Māori whānau and other ethnicities. We are journeying together to explore what it means to be a Tikanga Pākehā parish on a sacred Māori site. We are seeking to use more te reo Māori in our services and to have more connection with our Tikanga Māori partners. More information can be found in the History of St. Georges booklet
Our vision:
Being present on the site of the Gate Pā battle, we have a sense of responsibility for holding the story with integrity. The story lives on into the present and the church and the battle-site are a venue for ceremonies and commemorations, public lectures and educational trips. The place is visited by tourists and members of the public who wish to learn more about New Zealand’s history. We continue to care for this site and keep the story alive through various public events and hosting groups, including school groups. What We Offer

Grace and peace to you.

Following the recommendation of Bishop Andrew Hedge, and with Cyclone Vaianu expected to impact our region over the next 2–3 days, the Vestry and Rev’d Debbie Garrett have made the decision to cancel our 9:30am service this Sunday, 12 April.

This decision has been made out of care for the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our parish community.

We encourage you to stay informed through Civil Defence updates and by listening to Radio New Zealand for any announcements, including possible state of emergency declarations.

Please take care, stay safe, and check in on one another where you are able.

A prayer from the Anglican Diocese of Waiapu...
God of steadfast love,
protector and sustainer of your people,
We bring before you the places of our diocese touched by flooding—the Bay of Plenty - especially Mount Maunganui and Papamoa - and the communities of Tairāwhiti.
We pray for other places too.
We pray for all whānau whose homes, livelihoods, or sense of safety have been shaken.
Be close to those who are evacuated, weary, anxious, or grieving loss.
Grant comfort where there is shock,
hope where there is despair,
and patience where the road ahead feels long.
We hold before you your Church in these places—
for congregations opening their doors,
for clergy and lay leaders offering care,
and for all who are seeking to be signs of your compassion in difficult days.
Give wisdom, resilience, and gentleness in all that is offered.
We pray for emergency services, first responders, and welfare teams:
for those working long hours in dangerous conditions,
making urgent decisions and carrying heavy responsibility.
Sustain them with strength, clarity of mind, and protection from harm.
We pray also for council workers and local authorities,
for engineers, planners, cleaners, and coordinators,
as they work toward safety, recovery, and rebuilding.
Grant good judgement, cooperation, and endurance.
God of creation,
where land and water are unsettled,
bring steadiness.
Where communities are fractured,
bring solidarity.
Where people are exhausted,
bring rest.
Hold all these places and people in your care.
Wrap them in aroha,
and lead them gently toward healing and restoration.
We ask this in the name of Christ,
who stills storms and walks alongside his people. Amen.
