I sit and remember. In the middle of the night, I remember. I remember when I go for a walk. The journey of learning and submitting to the Holy Spirit is never static or confined to theological or academic terms. When I recently asked a group of primary school children who the Holy Spirit is, one of...

💙 Working Together for Whole Person Care

Chaplains often work closely alongside clinical staff, contributing a different perspective that helps support the whole wellbeing of a patient.

Recently, a chaplain noticed something simple but significant: while a patient was able to read, they were unable to see the menu print clearly and did not have glasses. This had gone unnoticed, yet it was affecting their ability to choose meals and maintain nutrition. Once identified, this was added to the care plan so the patient could be better supported.

The chaplain was also asked by staff to help think through the wider picture. The patient had been described as withdrawn and difficult to engage, with concerns about self care and vulnerability. By taking time to observe, listen, and reflect with the team, the chaplain helped reframe the situation — shifting the focus from assumptions to understanding, and from frustration to compassionate planning.

This is a vital part of chaplaincy work:
✨ noticing what might be missed
✨ advocating gently for the patient’s needs
✨ supporting staff as they navigate complex care
✨ helping plans move forward with dignity and care

When disciplines work together, patients are more likely to be truly seen and supported.

Aroha nui to all who collaborate for better care. 💙
