Community Connection Shout Out

The Kāpiti Salvation Army would like to acknowledge the ongoing collaboration with our dedicated Police Family Harm team here in Kāpiti. Our local Police Family Harm team work tirelessly on the frontline, responding to incidents, supporting whānau in crisis, and helping to create safer homes across our community. Police attend family harm callouts regularly, focusing not just on enforcement, but on early intervention, safety planning, and connecting families with the right support services.
Through our partnership, The Kāpiti Salvation Army’s able to provide food parcels and practical support to families affected by family harm —easing immediate stress and ensuring basic needs are met during difficult times.
Since last year, through Family Harm referrals, we’ve supported 24 whānau with food parcels. Food support may seem simple, but it plays a powerful role by: Reducing pressure in already stressful situations Supporting whānau to focus on safety and wellbeing Showing care, dignity, and compassion when it matters most.

The Family Harm Intervention Team (FHIT) are there not just in crisis, but to help create safer futures. They focus on support, prevention, and connecting people with the right help. Their approach is grounded in care, safety, and positive change for families in our community.
Together, we are proud to stand alongside FHIT to support whānau across Kāpiti with care, dignity, and hope.

TEAM MEMBER SHOUT OUT
LET US INTRODUCE YOU TO ANNIE
Annie is one of our Family Store Volunteers in Kāpiti, that’s volunteered in all the different locations our store has moved to in Kāpiti, over 33+ years!!!!!!
Annie was able to list all the store locations she volunteered in, and has seen so many changes, developments and different people. Annie mentioned that we needed to talk with Val too, who has been volunteering for 27+ years, we will most definitely have a shout out for Val in the coming weeks.
Annie shared a number of memories from her time with the Family Store along with time within the Corps (church) with the ladies group (Home League) and how she was a timbrel player and line dancer, within the Corps, and how the groups would often go to rest homes to bring a bit of entertainment and joy.
When Annie was asked what she enjoyed about volunteering most and what kept her for so long, her response was immediate, “I like the work! I like the people that come in the socialising and the connecting with people in the community.” Annie said she recognised that many people can come to the Family Store, to connect, to have a conversation, not always to buy something, and listening to peoples stories, helping people feel heard was a beautiful thing.
‘You are my Sunshine’ is Annies most favourite song which brings the memory of her mother singing with a young child on her knee in the family home growing up.
Reading a couple of books a week and completing jigsaws are the best way to relax and unwind for Annie, although she was quick to say, mowing the lawns, gardening, cooking the grandies breakfast on their ‘late start date’ at college all bring her great joy.
Annie shared that the best piece of advice she could give anyone would be “try not to be too hasty to criticize or judge people, because you never know what’s going on in their life, and that could be you one day! Stop and think.”

Annie, what a joy you are to our Family Store team and to our community. Your energy seems never ending and the way you show kindness and share wisdom is truly beautiful and such a gift to our community. We thank God for you and who you are.

GREAT NEWS..... OUR FLOOR IS FIXED.

Playgroup ...we're looking forward to spending the morning with you.

It took a few hours over a couple of days to sort and replace our water damaged floor.......but its done!
Unfortunately there was no 'like for like' with this flooring, so a bit of patchwork it is!
so.......we're thinking of creative ways to have fun and turn this into a fun feature of the room........got some ideas?

BIG SHOUT OUT FOR OUR PLAYGROUP

Our wonderful team, Jackie and Melaney, are great at preparing a welcoming space for connection, morning tea and providing social connections, support networks that can, does and will open up opportunities for valuable friendships to develop, particularly mums who might otherwise feel isolated.
As families begin to feel comfortable visiting playgroup, other connections and opportunities to become part of other groups like Messy Church happen. Many of our playgroup families attend Messy Church and some of the mums attend our Real Life Women evenings.
Jackie, our coordinator, really enjoys seeing parents connect with each other and has often witnessed new friendships made and developed. It’s also such a joy to see families connect together away from the playgroup too.
Jackies made lovely friendships with playgroup families, which is really evident when she hears her name being called out by a little one from playgroup when she bumps into them within the community. Jackie has been at the Salvation Army Kapiti Corps for 14 years, 10 of which she has been employed to run the playgroup program. She has thoroughly enjoyed the role during this time.
If you didn’t already know, Jackies a big reader. She’s often seen early in the morning
having a coffee and reading a book at a local cafe. Lovely friendships have developed at the cafe through the love of books. It's great how a discussion about a book can link
you to others. It's a real little hub now.
Jackies a real music buff, we never know what we might listen to as Jackie sets up and packs up after playgroup, she’s just as comfortable putting on her headphones to go walking, which brings her a lot of joy. This is a great time to listen to the Christian music she loves while enjoying the fresh air. She says that it is such a delight having the beautiful sound of the music in her ears. Jackie likes to start the morning off by reading a daily devotion. A great start to her day and is quick to share encouragement with our wider community!
You’re a treasure Jackie bringing joy, laughter and connections wherever you go, and we cant believe how many people on the Kāpiti Coast you actually know!

COMMUNITY NOTICE

Today we had someone come to check out some water damage in our social hall.......if you've ever had water damage, you'll probably know that the depth of damage isn't seen until the surface layer of floor, wall, ceiling is removed.
After cutting some of our water damaged social hall flooring out, we discovered a burst water pipe, where the extent of damage is not fully known.
So in the meantime, our social hall (downstairs) will be out of action until further notice.

Let us introduce you to Linda! She’s a bit shy so no personal photo.
Linda's a member of our corps (church), a valued volunteer with our Social Market and an all-round amazing gardener.
Linda's been part of our Kāpiti whānau for a number of years, and in December last year moved out of her comfort zone to see what our Social Market was about and loved it so much she joined the team!
Her favorite thing about being part of the Social Market is the people, she says “to see some come in a little anxious and relax a little over a cuppa and a chat.”
Being a listening ear and really listening as some share openly and honestly, is something Linda feels privileged to receive.
When asked how Linda relaxes, she shared she has a favorite CD for relaxing.
Tony O’Connor’s Memento.
Linda said that when people come to visit they sometimes ask her to turn her music off…….she smiled as she said she was willing to turn it down, but not off 😊.
As significant as music is, gardening is just as significant in Linda’s life, or even painting a wall, the process of making something look good again is very satisfying.
Linda looks for good things and blessings throughout her days, and says she finds much to be thankful and grateful for, which mirrors her favorite quote:
“Life is not measured by the breaths that we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”
Linda, we are so encouraged to have you as part of our church family and our Social Market team, you bring a lightness, you bring joy and you share something good in all things. Who you are makes an amazing difference to us, to our community and to those who met you throughout the week.

GOOD NEWS STORY from our Family Store

We are so grateful for the many donations that we receive in our family store, and a great team that work hard together to honour all donations and donors.

A good news story from our team shared how a member of a family was shifting homes and items no longer required were donated to our Family Store.
Some days later, it was discovered that two very special items were mistakenly donated that held sentimental value to the owner.
One of our wonderful Family Store team members was present as the family member came back to the Family Store requesting the special items return.
One item was found quickly and returned, the other could not be found, so details of the donor were taken with the agreement that if the other item was found, they would be contacted.

If you’ve been to our Kāpiti Family Store, you’ll know it’s a busy place, lots of bargains with new donations being displayed regularly throughout the day.

With diligence, our team continued looking in our processing spaces, and the second item was found!
With much delight our team member was able make contact with the donors family member. They were as overjoyed as the owner, to receive the return of their special items mistakenly donated.
This isn’t always the case, but in this instance we were part of the joy in returning valued treasures to their owners!
Indeed a good reuniting story.
