From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. - Jonah 2:1

There is a moment in every believer’s life when we come face to face with our own helplessness — and it is often in that very moment that we discover how completely we depend on God. Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the fish shows us exactly this.

In Jonah 2:2, we read that Jonah called out to the Lord in his despair, and the Lord answered him. Even at his lowest point, cut off and seemingly beyond help, Jonah turned to God — and God heard him. By verse 4, Jonah recognises that even his affliction has brought him to a place of remembrance: it is God he depends on, not himself.

Verses 5 to 7 describe Jonah as good as dead, sinking beyond hope, yet it was God who reached down and brought him back to life. There was nothing Jonah could do to save himself; his rescue was entirely the Lord’s doing. But we see in verse 9, Jonah’s despair has turned to thanksgiving. He declares with confidence that salvation belongs to the Lord alone.

This is the heart of Jonah’s prayer: complete dependence on God’s mercy, kindness, grace, providence, and preservation — and ultimately, on His salvation. Jonah learned, in the depths, what many of us only learn through our own hard seasons: that we were never meant to carry life in our own strength.

As we come together this week to worship our Lord and Saviour, let us be reminded that we too depend on God for everything — our spiritual walk and our daily, physical needs alike. When life brings us low, may we respond as Jonah did: not in despair alone, but in prayer, trusting that the God who heard him hears us too.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. - Romans 12:1

Sacrifice is a very important theme throughout the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. When sacrificing animals according to God’s law, a priest would kill the animal, cut it into pieces and place it on the altar. Sacrifice was important, but even in the Old Testament, God made it clear that obedience from the heart was much more important.

In 1 Samuel 15:22 we read, “But Samuel replied, “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams”.

God wants us to offer ourselves, not animals, as living sacrifices.

What does it mean “to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God”?

It means total surrender; giving your whole everyday life, choices, and actions to God as a way of worship, instead of following the sinful patterns of the world. It means total

surrender, giving your mind, body and daily habits to God, rather than living just for yourself.

What does a living sacrifice look like?

It means daily surrender: giving up personal control over your time, plans, comfort and desires.

It means renewal of your mind: That means a transformation of how you think rather than just a change of outward behaviour.

It means putting obedience into action: Using our hands, feet and words, doing what is right.

It means putting others first: Loving our neighbours as ourselves, showing mercy and serving others.

It means ultimately, always putting God first in all things. Our perfect example is Christ, who gave his all, the ultimate sacrifice.

Worship isn’t only what we do on Sunday as we gather at church; worship is something we do 24/7. As we live our lives as a living sacrifice, this is true and proper worship.

May God give the strength and the grace to live sacrificial lives for Christ.
