My last Insight

As I will be finishing up in my role this coming Sunday this will be my final ‘sixty second insight’ to you.

There is scene in the bible where John the Baptist is asked about Jesus, a newcomer who had not long appeared on the scene. John responding by saying, “He must become greater, I must become less” (John 3:30) John the Baptist recognised that it wasn’t about him and that the spotlight needed to be directed towards Jesus and who He is. As followers of Jesus our hearts, actions and words should reflect John’s words and it shouldn’t be about us.

May we know what it is to step out of the spotlight and allow Jesus to get the attention in our lives.

Tend and Feed the Fire

The tendency of fire is to go out; watch the fire on the altar of your heart. Anyone who has tended a fireplace fire knows that it needs to be stirred up occasionally. - William Booth

I believe as followers of Jesus we all can remember a time when we seemed more alive….more on fire for Christ. In our daily lives we need to stoke and keep adding fuel to the fire of our faith.

Just as the Apostle Paul encouraged and reminded a young Christian named Timothy to…..”fan into flame the gift of God which is in you…” May we tend and feed the fire of the Holy Spirit that has been deposited and ignited within us.

“Hold everything in your hands lightly, otherwise it hurts when God pries your fingers open.”
― Corrie Ten Boom

I suspect we all have a tendency (to some degree) to want to hold onto things and keep them to ourselves in an effort to maintain control out of fear of losing what we think we have got.

A well-known Proverb reminds us to, “Trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5,6 NIV

May we learn to hold onto things loosely.

What are your convictions?

I’m not talking about a list of crimes you’ve been charged with

Convictions are firmly held beliefs….not just your ideas or opinions.

Your convictions are found in those things for which you are willing to put your life on the line for.

I don’t know about you, but if you were to talk with my children they would tell you that I have an opinion about most things. Opinions come and go, and don’t really cost that much, convictions on the other hand are a different story.

In Hebrews 10:23 the Christians were told, “Let us continue to hold firmly to the hope that we confess without wavering, for the one who made the promise is faithful.”

May our convictions be found in and founded on our God who is true and faithful.

What do our lives tell others about Jesus?

I am sure that if we were to make a list of people who claimed to be Christians, I suspect our list would be far longer than God’s list of those who truly are His.

In Titus 1:16 we are told….”They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him”.

May our lives match our claims.

Jesus is God, and He came to find you

To think that God…the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of the universe… would care about humanity enough to step into our world to make Himself knowable.

In John 1:14 we are told that the Word (God) became flesh (in Jesus) and made His dwelling among us. In Matthew 18:10-14 Jesus then tells the parable of the lost sheep and how the shepherd leaves the 99 to go and find the one who was lost. Those two passages reveal God’s activity and how He firstly moves towards us……He is a God who makes the first step.

God came to find you.

Church Family, wishing you God’s richest blessings as we celebrate the birth of our Saviour Jesus this year.

The miracle of Christmas is found in the truth that our God and Creator would come amongst us and be Emmanuel (God with us) so that we would be saved from the brokenness that afflicts us and this world. Jesus is truly the God / man rescue plan.

For all those who are able, join our Christmas Day service: 9.30am at the Baptist Church

If you could condense all the truths of Christmas into just 3 words it would be….’God with us’ and if you could condense those 3 words into just 1 word it would be, ‘Jesus’.

Remember what the Angel said to Joseph, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

May we grasp this Christmas that in Jesus we find everything we truly have need of.

Christmas

The real meaning of Christmas is found within its’ name, ‘Christ’. Christmas was intended to be a time where mankind celebrated the reality of a God who loved us so much that he broke into this world and came in amongst us in the form of Jesus Christ. It is this heavenly gift which brings true joy, hope and love which will last. So, as you hear the carols sung this Christmas season listen out for the words, joy, hope and love and ponder the one who can turn those words into reality within your life.
