Our children are given to us for a time to cherish, to protect, to nurture, and then to salute as they go their separate ways. They too have the light of God within, and a family should be a learning community in which children not only learn skills and values from parents, but in which adults learn new ways of experiencing things and seeing things through young eyes. From their birth on, let us cultivate the habit of dialogue and receptive listening. We should respect their right to grow into their own wholeness, not just the wholeness we may wish for them.

Kia ora e te whānau,

Tomorrow, the 30th of May, Amnesty International will be hosting a stall at the Saturday market. It’s a great opportunity to show support, sign petitions, and have meaningful conversations with like-minded people. Please feel free to stop by, connect, and lend your voice.

We are on track for our regular “first Saturday of the month” march. We will be gathering next Saturday, 6th of June, at 10:30 am at our usual spot in 1903 Square. As always, we’ll have our library with our latest additions and merchandise available, and we’ll be marching proudly with our banners and flags in support of Palestinians.

The transformation that Palestine - and all communities striving for justice - needs is not only global but deeply collective. When we gather, we help liberate the mind from resignation and strengthen our shared belief in justice and the right to live free. By showing up, you help build a community that refuses to give up on hope.

Today, 24 May, is International Women's Day for Disarmament, a day to think about women and girls in , in and everywhere where armed conflict rages, and where and are denied; and a day to remember and celebrate women past and present who reject violence as a means of resolving conflict, working instead for disarmament, peace and real security for all - today and every day 💕

It is a day to reflect on the millions of women around the world who are denied and while so many states (including Zealand) prioritise endless preparations for war - collectively spending more than $2,887 billion (USD, ±$4,910 billion NZD), on combat ready armed forces last year - instead of investing in women's wellbeing and real security that meet the needs of all ... https://www.facebook.com/PeaceMovementAotearoa/posts/1419085846915210

Here in Aotearoa, the Ministry for Women's funding allocation in (for "improving the lives of NZ women") is a mere 0.16% of the amount allocated for military spending last year, and 0.26% of the amount allocated so far for the year ahead, https://www.facebook.com/PeaceMovementAotearoa/posts/1131737118983419

While much of the excess military spending as pursues a range of militaristic fantasies, including an Air Force space squadron, as it seeks to be a combat capable “force multiplier” with “enhanced lethality and deterrent effect” was funded by the destruction of the pay equity process, $3 billion a year stolen from thousands of underpaid women (see, for example https://www.psa.org.nz/news-media/budget-confirms-12-8-billion-theft-of-wages-from-women-pay-equity-betrayal-laid-bare and https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/05/22/budget-2025-kiwisaver-changes-pay-equity-savings-revealed ).

Thirty-three pay equity claims were cancelled allegedly to “free up” $1.8 billion for “capital investment”, negatively impacting thousands of women ... then $2 billion was spent on five combat helicopters, https://www.facebook.com/PeaceMovementAotearoa/posts/1231590028998127

"I might be too immersed in parenthood to have room to reflect much on the spirituality of it right now. Recently I went to a talk at my meeting where several parents spoke about their experiences of parenting faithfully. Like me, they had a difficult time articulating what is uniquely Quaker about....

We cannot hope to transfer more than a little of our wisdom to our young people – if wisdom it is. We have increasingly to stand back as they grow older, knowing that the problem is passing out of our hands. They go off to college – or to live in a flat of their own, that aim and delight of so many young people. At last they have privacy, freedom from supervision and criticism, independence – but they are now fully exposed to all that we fear….

This is the moment of disengagement, when parents must tell themselves that the young people are no longer their children and that they are outside their discipline…. It is also the moment for parents to tell themselves that their children are not alone. They are in the hands of God.
