Vimutti Monastery is a Buddhist community in the lineage of one of Thailand’s greatest meditation masters, Venerable Ajahn Chah. Created with the intention of generating peace and wisdom in the world, Vimutti is situated in the midst of 150 acres of native bush, pine forest, streams, ponds and rolling hills. The monastery offers seclusion and suitable conditions for those who wish to deepen their

meditation, as well as the opportunity for people of all nationalities to join together in harmony and work towards a noble common goal. One can experience the rare and precious opportunity to take part in the daily life of a monastery, participate in regular meditation workshops and serve the community on ‘Good Kamma’ days. With the combination of a traditional approach to monastic training, a beautiful natural environment and a compassionate atmosphere, Vimutti is a powerful support for the alleviation of human suffering. True freedom and lasting happiness are to be found through the purification of the heart, the cultivation and perfection of the Buddha’s Eight-fold Path. By encouraging the study, practice and realisation of these teachings, Vimutti can truly be a liberating refuge on the way to awakening.

Ajahn Chandako Retires

After 18 years of service to Vimutti Buddhist Monastery and the Auckland Theravada Buddhist Association, Ajahn Chandako has retired as abbot. He will be looking towards simplifying his life, moving in the direction of peace, reducing burdens, and a period of sustained Dhamma practice in solitude. We wish him well in his new endeavours and will remember his years of hard work with gratitude.

Ajahn Chandako was the first monk to live at Vimutti and was invited to be abbot in 2004. He gave the monastery its name, and through his teachings the monastery thrived. Ajahn regularly led retreats, meditation workshops, and he gave teachings nearly every day after the meal. During the time Ajahn was at the Vimutti, the mailing list increased from a few dozen to over 2500.

Ajahn Chandako designed and developed most of the infrastructure for the monastery, including a stunning stupa, enshrined with Relics of the Buddha and Arahants that had been offered to him. Ajahn also organised building 15 kutis, a major upgrade to the sala, a meditation hall, a large workshop and shower room, a garage and a library. He designed the landscaping, including 10 large ponds and planted over 10,000 trees. Ajahn also personally designed the Vimutti website, a beautiful and useful Dhamma resource and source of information. Ajahn put all his heart and physical energy into creating Vimutti Monastery, working 7 days a week, and we all owe him a great debt of gratitude.

A long-time supporter writes:
“It is under Ajahn's skillful spiritual and practical guidance that Vimutti has evolved into a preeminent place for meditation and deep practice of the Dhamma. I can speak of Ajahn's leadership as someone who has known him across the last ten years. Those experiences and others have given me the good fortune of regular communication with Ajahn. I hold him in particularly high esteem.

Ajahn is someone who can give clear guidance even to advanced practitioners. Thai colleagues inform me that his guidance when given in Thai is similarly effective. He communicates the Dhamma in plain terms and is patient with questions from both beginners and veteran meditators.

I have found Ajahn's approach consistently helpful to my practice and understanding. His guidance, spirit of inquiry, and the high standards he holds himself to, all create an excellent context. The combination and relative proximity of the monastery and Auckland Vihara creates a wonderful opportunity for New Zealanders. He has done much to develop the monastery, as well as to maintain teachings at both venues, and continues to do that very well.

In the time I have known him, Ajahn has always shown warmth and wisdom. We are very fortunate to have Ajahn Chandako as Abbot at the calm, well-established practice environment of Vimutti Buddhist Monastery.”

Retreat led by Willa Thaniya Reid and Eliza Day

A 3-day meditation retreat was offered by Willa and Eliza at Vimutti, focusing on the Four 'Divine Abodes': loving-kindness, compassion, empathic joy and equanimity. These qualities are greatly needed at this time, when some people are obsessed with the madness of fear, anger and aggression. To realize a world that is characterized by peace and harmony, we all need a divine abode in our hearts.

Here is another reflection by a long-term lay guest who spent 3 months at Vimutti.

Inner Peace and Quiet
by Pearl Li

Vimutti is a place for inner peace and quiet.
I didn’t know I would stay for 3 months in Vimutti this time, although I came in 2017 and stayed for 5 nights the first time. I was just a beginner then of the real Dhamma practice. But somehow it built unshakable confidence in Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. I saw the path is very clear, shown by the Sangha who are walking on the path that the Buddha pointed out some 2600 years ago. I then went to SE Asia for further practice and returned to NZ before the pandemic.

In the last two years I stayed alone, trying to practice just by myself, however I can see my practice didn’t go anywhere. I was stuck, like a wheel, if it doesn’t go forward it runs backwards. The Dhamma I understood somehow deteriorating...
Vimutti monastery had come to my mind a few times, and when I finally decided to go visit again, I simply just wanted some freshness and to make a donation. My mind was still unsure and impacted/confused by the pandemic.

I felt calmness when I went sitting close to the Stupa and then joined the meal and discussion. I felt Abbot Ajahn Chandako is very compassionate when he was talking to the lay guests and when he answered my question. Then the thought came to my mind that I want to stay here... for 3 months! I asked straight away and Ajahn said yes. That was totally unplanned!

Looking back, I benefitted so much in these three months by facing so many challenges both inside and outside. I practiced endurance as I knew this is for the sake of release and freedom. I was able to dedicate all my time to practice as there are almost no distractions... no internet... no music …no shopping… All is the thinking of Dhamma, reading Dhamma books, listening to Dhamma discussions and Dhamma talks... Practicing Dhamma in peaceful natural surroundings. The Buddha said… associate with the wise, listen to the true Dhamma and practice according to the proper teaching.

Although the outside conditions keep changing, as well as your reactions and any uninvited thoughts, but you become the knower, you see the process again and again… until you become more and more clear of its nature—the impermanence… the suffering from grasping the ever-changing nature and none of it can be controlled by ‘anybody’.

I’m so grateful that I could stay in Vimutti with the warm support and encouragement from Abbot and Sangha, the donors who made the whole place available for the sincere path finder, all the volunteers who are dedicated to helping, and the well-prepared food brought every day by the heartful supporters.

Psychoanalysis vs Meditation
https://youtu.be/InUqH5LtZFk
Here is a short video that touches on this large subject. In the quest to understand oneself deeply and know inner peace, there is an area of overlap between traditional Buddhist Meditation and modern psychotherapy. However, they are based on very different approaches to looking at the mind. In this video, Ajahn Chandako compares the non-verbal method of breath meditation vs analytical self-examination for healing fears, anxiety and trauma.

Vimutti has a new group of residents. In the past year, a dozen peacocks have moved into the monastery. They have added color without making too much noise, and over time have become increasingly tame. Peacocks are not native to New Zealand, so initially it wasn’t clear where they came from, but apparently peacocks were introduced from India decades ago and eventually went wild. Together with the wild deer, goats, boar, feral sheep, rabbits, pheasants, possums and abundant bird life that reside at Vimutti, the peacocks remind us that we share this land with many other species.
