The Government's move-on orders aren't a solution to homelessness—they are a penalty for being poor. Forcing our most vulnerable neighbours into the shadows with threats of fines and jail doesn't solve the housing crisis; it just breaks the connection between people and the help they need. TAKE AC

🚨 Criminalising homelessness is not the answer. 🚨

Today, the Government is holding the first reading of the proposed Summary Offences (Move-on Orders) Amendment Bill.

This legislation would give police the power to issue "Move-On Orders" to people sleeping rough, begging, or indicating an “intent to inhabit” a public place—including young people as young as 14. Those who don’t comply could face a $2,000 fine or up to three months in prison.

This bill is cruel, unnecessary, and a likely breach of human rights. It simply pushes vulnerable people out of public sight instead of fixing the root causes of homelessness.

At Common Grace Aotearoa, we believe in transforming unjust structures for the common good. We need evidence-based solutions, not harmful measures that victimise those already doing it tough.

📢 How you can take action TODAY:
Make your submission: Use our quick-submission form right now to have your say, or head directly to the Parliament website starting tomorrow (Friday 22nd). Check out our submission guide to help you get started!

Mobilise your church: We are creating resources to help you gather submissions at your church service next Sunday. Keep an eye out for these next week!

If enough of us speak up in our hundreds, we can force a rethink and protect our neighbours.
