As a gesture of appreciation to the natural environment, we will conduct on the auspicious day of the full moon (this Sunday 7th September) a Mountain Smoke Offering (Riwo Sangcho) invocation of Guru Padmasambhava. This will be conducted by Jampel Dorje Rinpoche.

The Himalayan Incense Ceremony is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist practice that involves offering fragrant incense to purify negativity and cultivate auspicious conditions within oneself and the surrounding environment. During the ceremony, a carefully prepared mixture of woods, incense, and other natural substances is burned to produce aromatic incense. This incense is symbolically offered to enlightened beings, ancestral guardians of the Banks Peninsula area, including the local Taniwha, and to all beings facing difficulties or hardship. It is also dedicated to the flourishing of enlightened values such as compassion, wisdom, and peace. The combination of the making of symbolic offerings with the cultivation of positive aspirations for the environment leads to improved mental and spiritual harmony, with ongoing benefits to balance and harmonise the environment and all forms of life. The ceremony centres around a small fire. Various natural substances are placed on the embers to produce incense. Participants can either follow the text or simply observe the ceremony.

The meditative and contemplative ceremony will take place at the top of the hill section of 56 Park Terrace, Corsair Bay, Lyttelton where Simon, Kim and their dog Kali live. They are so happy to host Jampel Dorje Rinpoche during his stay in Christchurch, Rinpoche is the student and son of Thinley Norbu Rinpoche and grandson of Dudjom Rinpoche.

It is 30 steps up to the house and 30 more steps up to the top of the section and unfortunately no wheelchair access so need to have good footwear.

Parking: Limited street parking is available (remember to put wing mirrors in as the street is narrow), but plenty of parking available in Corsair Bay car park.

SINZ prioritised sustainability throughout the event, implementing numerous initiatives to minimise its environmental footprint. "Guided by the Buddha's teaching on Dependent Arising, which highlights the interconnectedness of all things, we approached our Wānaka event with a commitment to sustainability. Our conscious choices—such as reducing plastic and contemplating the ripple effects of our actions—enable us to actively participate in environmental preservation for future generations.” stated Kim Saxon, Director of Siddhartha's Intent New Zealand. "We're dedicated to ensuring our presence in this pristine environment leaves only positive impacts."

This public talk will be based on “Banquet of Liberation: An Aspiration Prayer on the Stages of the Mahayana Path” by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.

This prayer touches on the main elements of the path, beginning with the foundational thoughts that turn the mind towards the Dharma. Rinpoche’s teaching on this poem will be accessible for those with a new interest in Buddhism as well as those who have been following teachings for many years.

You can find this short prayer, translated by Adam Kane, in the Khyentse Vision Project Reading Room:

In case you missed it, you can now check out BUDDHA’S VISION: How the simplicity of the Buddhist view can help us thrive in a complex and uncertain future. 🧘‍♀️

This was the first visit of Dzongsar Jamyang Khyenste Rinpoche to Christchurch where we gave a public talk at the iconic Isaac Theatre Royal on 15 Nov 2023.

Really interesting questions were put forward by the local and international sangha, such as:
❓Are we approaching the end of something in the West? How are we, as dharma practitioners, best to relate to the things as they fall apart in the West? What are the most important skills to nurture?
❓I understand that India is the birthplace of Buddhism, why then is less than 1% of the population of India Buddhist?
❓Is the modern progressive or post modern culture a friend of the dharma? Or a threat to it?
❓How should we relate to AI as it is developing so quickly and from a Buddhist perspective could it develop its own mind or consciousness?
❓Is Buddhism relevant in today's world, especially in the West?
❓Is Karma predestined or is it a result of free will?

and much more!

Wow such an inspiring visit and wonderful to show , Drubgyud Tenzin Rinpoche, Khenpo Tsering, Lama Yeshe Jinpa, Rinzin & Namgyal around and take them to the heart of Aotearoa - Aoraki.

To the Ngāi Tahu people, Aoraki represents the most sacred of ancestors, from whom Ngāi Tahu descend and who provide the iwi (tribe) with its sense of communal identity, solidarity and purpose. The ancestor embodied in the mountain remains the physical manifestation of Aoraki, the link between the supernatural and the natural world.

So wonderful this low impact event could bring so much benefit both relatively and ultimately.🌳
