"Do you want to be made well?". This seems like an odd question for Jesus to ask the lame man waiting to be healed by the pool of Siloam. Yet, if we take a closer look at the story in John 5, perhaps the question is quite reasonable. If the lame man had made it as far as the spot beside the pool, then what was preventing him from getting help to get into the pool itself? And perhaps this is a question that has relevance for us too. Just like the lame man who was in the right place, but not taking the plunge that would actually heal him, are we also attending places of worship, but not personally immersing ourselves in the word which can transform us? Ultimately, accepting God's offer of salvation is up to each of us. "Do you want to be made well?".

What does the Bible actually tell us about what and who God is? How do we draw close to a God we cannot see and build a relationship with him?

We recently enjoyed a thoughtful series of talks around these big questions. See the link below to hear the series, 'Dwelling in the secret place'.

In Acts chapter 3 Peter and John paused on their way to worship to help a lame man who sat at the gate of the temple every day. He'd never been able to walk, and as he sat, he hoped for nothing more than some money. But on that day, God gave him something much greater - the miracle of walking. Now, he was able to join Peter and John as they went into the temple to worship. No matter how long we have waited, God can bring unexpected change and joy for any one of us. We are all in need of help like the lame man and God calls us to pause to consider how we can help each other on the way.

The book of Isaiah particularly emphasises the importance of names. In a recent exhort we considered just two examples from Isaiah 58:12: "You shall be called the Repairer of the broken walls, The Restorer of streets to dwell in" What does this mean? In this passage God is not concerned about physical rebuilding - but about the spirit of the people.

Just as city walls need to be repaired if a breach occurs, so do our relationships with each other. God wants us to be among those who reach out to repair and strengthen our relationships with each other - just as he has reached out to reconcile us to himself through Christ.

Similarly, the streets in a city are a means of communication between houses. To restore the streets means to reach out and share with each other, keeping up effective and encouraging communication.

God wants us to be people who work on that which holds us together, to be the city where God dwells.

Our God is a great God who is all knowing, all powerful and everywhere present. Yet he is also a God of love and hope. His purpose with creation is to create a family, through His Son, Jesus, the firstborn and centre of God's plan from the beginning. The joy and love God has for his precious Son, Jesus, who loves and serves his Father is a special relationship that God wants us to share in as part of his family too. The sound of God's call, 'this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased' is a clarion call to all of us to honour and follow Jesus, who God sent as the vehicle for our salvation.

1 Corinthians 8:6 "there is One God, the father, from whom all things come and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus the Messiah, through whom were created all things."

The prayer of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane right before his arrest and crucifixion gives us an insight into the great love and faith he had. Jesus prayed, "Father if you are willing, take this cup from me, but not my will but yours be done" (Luke 22:41-42). Jesus struggled in his battle to trust God and overcome his own desires, to the point of physical strain and weakness. Yet, he did overcome and chose to accept the trial God gave him because he loves us. Psalm 22 shows the anguish Jesus suffered on the cross, but also the much greater strength Jesus gained through God's promise to bring salvation to all the world. Jesus' sufferings teach us that it is ok to struggle and plead with God, and that this struggle is individual. But God has a plan, and his plan is always for our best, even if we do not fully understand it.

Many find comfort in the Psalms during times of distress. Psalm 27 is a powerful Psalm about God's strength and protection. God is our light and strength. As children of God we are in God's stronghold, a place of safety where we do not need to be afraid of the temporary trials of this life. It can be difficult to see the hand of providence in our lives, but as David was patient under trials, we too can deepen our faith if we allow God to teach and lead us. Waiting on God is a foreign idea in our society of instant things - instant food, instant buying power and electricity at the flick of a switch, but God does not run to our timetable. Have faith under trial to wait for God who is our salvation.
"Wait on the LORD" Psalm 27:14.
