Special treat this week.

At Grace@7 we'll be opening up the question of God and suffering.
Guest speaker Nic Blackie will help us think through a faithful answer to the questions suffering pose to faith in God.

We'll also hear some personal stories about how God works in and comforts us in suffering.

Sunday 7pm. 2 Duke Street. North Dunedin.

Hi, I’m Adam.
My faith journey has been anything but straightforward. At times I’ve felt almost like Frodo carrying the Ring to Mt Doom!

I’ve always believed the truth will stand up to challenging questions. That’s meant some hard moments where I’ve looked up at the sky (metaphorically speaking) and wondered if anyone was there.

When Jesus cried on the cross “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, I know how that feels. But I also take a lot of comfort from that. Jesus knew what it was like to feel intense suffering, to question God’s plan, but to trust him anyway.

I haven’t always been so trusting. But I also take comfort from the thief on the cross next to Jesus – the one who could do nothing but confess his faith.
That was enough. And it will be enough for me.

May is Mission Month at Grace Bible Church, where we devote the month to stirring our hearts for God's mission and supporting our mission partners around the world. On Sundays, hear about what God is doing in Thailand, Africa, PNG, Scotland, as well as closer to home.

Two special events to put in your diary:
Sun 17 May, 7pm - Guest Speaker Nic Blackie will speak on the Big Question of God and Suffering. This is a great one to bring a friend to.

Sat 23rd May - It's the Great Grace Cake Auction! We're raising money to train Christian leaders in PNG, where Kenneth and Jane are serving right now.

Hi, I'm Owen.

I join with Christ by serving others in PNG in a small village that has a Hospital and a school in the middle of nowhere. I do machincal repairs and welding there, and enjoy working with these guys, who own nothing, but are on fire for Christ. This makes me realise that I need to rely more and more on Christ rather than on the things that we have.

A couple of memorable occasions that helped me to strengthen my faith in Christ were; when my boat driver abandoned me on the side of the river at an unknown village leaving me with a man who did not speak any English and was holding a machete. Thankfully he only used it to open a coconut for me.

Another time I was staying at another village well known for its sorcery and witchcraft, I was told to be careful and keep my doors locked. God provided a wild dog who spent the whole night on my doorstep every night I was there. One night there was a large commotion when it chased something or someone away. This was very unusual for these dogs usually they are roaming looking for food continuously.

These occasions have really strengthened my faith and trust in God.

Join us for our special Easter services:

GOOD FRIDAY: 10am
EASTER SUNDAY: 9am, 11am, 7pm

It's the heart of it all

Make no mistake: if he rose at all
It was as His body;
If the cell’s dissolution did not reverse, the molecule reknit,
The amino acids rekindle,
The Church will fall.

It was not as the flowers,
Each soft spring recurrent;
It was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddled eyes of the
Eleven apostles;
It was as His flesh; ours.

The same hinged thumbs and toes
The same valved heart
That—pierced—died, withered, paused, and then regathered
Out of enduring Might
New strength to enclose.

Let us not mock God with metaphor,
Analogy, sidestepping, transcendence,
Making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the faded
Credulity of earlier ages:
Let us walk through the door.

The stone is rolled back, not papier-mache,
Not a stone in a story,
But the vast rock of materiality that in the slow grinding of
Time will eclipse for each of us
The wide light of day...

Hey, I'm Chris, and I’ve been attending Grace Bible Church since 2008.
One of my favourite verses that changed my perspective in a profound way is John 3v30. "He must become greater, I must become less."
John the Baptist is growing his ministry, and this fellow Jesus comes along, with his own following. John's friends ask him how to respond with all these people following Jesus, and that verse is his response.
I definitely lived out the opposite of this verse as a young man, wanting my own life and ambitions to become greater, and for that to happen, God had to become less.
This upside-down idea that our life, personal goals and ambition ought to take second place to Jesus really hit me in my heart and challenged my whole relationship with God. Years later after reading this verse, I am still joyfully learning and practicing what it means for him to become greater in my life,work and family, and for me to become less to make that happen.
