Is Baptism a Work?

Many say, “Faith alone saves!” citing Ephesians 2:8-9 to argue that Baptism isn’t necessary for salvation:
“For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

But is Paul saying that no action is involved in salvation? When Paul speaks about “works,” he’s addressing works of our own righteousness—human efforts to earn salvation. This is consistent with Romans 4:2-5, where Paul says:
“If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about—but not before God... Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”

Just as Abraham’s faith wasn’t about earning anything, neither is Baptism. It’s not a “work of man,” but a work of God. John 6:29 says, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Like faith and repentance, Baptism is an act of obedience to God’s command—part of His grace, not something we can boast about.

The New Testament repeatedly connects Baptism to salvation:

Mark 16:16: “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.”
Acts 2:38: “Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins.”
1 Peter 3:21: “Baptism now saves you.”

Finally, consider Titus 3:5:
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”

Baptism isn’t about earning salvation; it’s about receiving God’s grace through obedient faith.
