Samadhi Buddhist Vihara is the main Sri Lankan based Buddhist temple in the south island of New Zealand, situated in 358 Maddisons Road, Christchurch.Samadhi Buddhist Vihara extends its services to the other far away cities in the south island, such as Dunedin and Invercargill.Samadhi Buddhist Vihara was established in may 2002 with the support of Sri Lankan and other Buddhist well-wishers in New

Zealand to fulfill the religious and spiritual aspirations of the Buddhist community in the south island.Samadhi Buddhist Vihara follows Theravada Buddhist tradition and provides spiritual guidance to integrate Lord Buddha’s teachings into everyday life of the Buddhist community. The Vihara has been the center for many spiritual and cultural activities of the Sri Lankan Buddhists living in the south island. The community has been positively influenced through the association and participation of these activities. It has been a great pleasure to see the section of community who always had a close liaison with the temple, expanding their spiritual and cultural awareness as well as another section becoming interested in the teachings of Buddha. This centre currently conducts many regular programmes including monthly Sil programmes, weekly Sri Lankan language and cultural school Dhamma School, weekly Dhamma discussions during the Vassana (rainy) season, meditation retreats as well as annual events such as celebration of Vesak, Katina robe ceremony and other religious and social activities. The Dhamma library of the Vihara is being maintained in a high quality, providing knowledge to those who seek refuge of Lord Buddha’s teachings. At present, the temple is located in a small home and a preliminary action plan has been initiated to acquire a new location for the temple to provide better facilities to the Buddhist community of the south island.

🌼 Vesak Celebrations in Dunedin – 16 May 🌼

A beautiful and spiritually uplifting Vesak celebration was held on 16 May at St Patrick’s Basilica, South Dunedin, bringing together the local community in a day filled with devotion, reflection, and joy.

The event was graciously led by Ven. Makuldeniye Somarathana Thero and Ven. Rajawelle Wajiragnana Thero from the Christchurch Samadhi Buddhist Vihara, whose guidance added deep meaning to the day’s observances.

The morning programme offered a reflective atmosphere, where both adults and children observed the Ata Sil (Eight Precepts).

In the evening, the celebrations came alive with a vibrant Children’s Perehera, followed by a serene and devotional Sath Budu Puja. The day concluded with a community-hosted Dansala, embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion that lies at the heart of Vesak.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the venue was illuminated with colourful lanterns and creative lighting, lovingly designed and crafted by children and their parents from Dunedin and surrounding areas. The decorations truly reflected the unity, creativity, and dedication of the community.

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, participated, and supported this wonderful celebration. It was a truly memorable day that strengthened community bonds and honoured the timeless teachings of the Buddha.

The joy of Vesak shines through the creativity of our Dhamma School children.
Today, our little ones lovingly created beautiful Vesak cards, while the older children crafted colourful Vesak kudu with devotion and enthusiasm.

May these wholesome activities help nurture faith, kindness, mindfulness, and appreciation for the teachings of the Buddha. 🙏💛
