The Cathedral Tower holds a significant place in everybody’s mind. Home to the belfry, the reinstated tower will hold 14 bells, one more than before. The bell ringers and team here at the Transitional Cathedral look forward to reinstating our bell ringing traditions and welcome the day we once again hear the bells ringing out over the city.

BIG NEWS!

Our bells will be heard across UK this Sunday morning!

'Bells on Sunday' is a short spot on BBC Radio 4, broadcast early on a Sunday morning, featuring a different place each week. This week, 6th August, will feature a recording of the cathedral bells - the same recording that is broadcast each Friday in Cathedral Square. If you can stream UK radio, it will be around 5:43am in UK, or 4:43 in the afternoon NZ time. I will post a link here too, once available.

Bells on Sunday, comes from Christchurch Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand.

This is a big step towards the cathedral being a centre of worship once more. The first service inside the building since 2011. Hopefully the bells will be calling people to worship soon as well.

Join us for a momentous occasion - the Christ Church Cathedral Choir's First Evensong inside the Cathedral since 2011!

We are thrilled to announce that due to the continued success of our restoration work, the Cathedral is safe to enter. The Christ Church Cathedral Choir will perform in the Cathedral, with the service being live streamed into the Square and the Transitional Cathedral's YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/live/v4tPHcLDxig).

A little update on the tower from the cathedral reinstatement team.

The tower will be rebuilt in its original position. From outside, the tower’s location and dimensions will be as before the quake, and it will look visually similar. However, it will be a completely new build with base isolation, strong reinforced walls and a steel steeple. A modern accessible stair and passenger lift will provide visitor access to the reinstated bells and the view from the top of the tower.
