It was a privilege for Bishop Michael to meet with Archbishop Charles Balvo, a former Apostolic Nuncio to New Zealand and Australia. As Nuncio during the Canterbury earthquakes, Archbishop Balvo witnessed firsthand a significant chapter in our city’s history. During his visit, Bishop Michael had the opportunity to share the vision for our new Cathedral.

We are promoting teaching in Catholic schools as a career option to our high school students at their careers evenings this week. Last night we were at St Bede's. Thank you David (St Mary's) and Conor (Villa Maria) for manning the stand and encouraging students with an interest in teaching. Bishop Michael has been in the US on retreat and took the opportunity to visit his alma mater, Franciscan University of Steubenville. This year Caritas begins a new three-year focus on belonging — to God, to one another, and to creation. Join in reflecting on the truth at the heart of it all: God made you. God knows you. God loves you. You belong. Through prayer, education, and action, we can build communities where everyone knows they have a place to belong.

The parish community of St Peter Chanel warmly invites parishioners, former parishioners, families and friends to a Farewell and Final Closing Service for St Mary & St Francis de Sales Church, Rangiora. The church has remained closed since the earthquakes and, following many years of consultation, heritage processes and discernment, all necessary steps towards demolition have now been completed.

This will be a time of thanksgiving for the generations of faith, worship, family celebrations and community life that have been centred around this church for well over a century, while also looking forward with hope to the future rebuilding of a new Catholic church in Rangiora.

The Season of Creation is a special time when Christians around the world unite in prayer and action to care for our common home. From today, (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) to 4 October (Feast of St Francis of Assisi), we are invited to renew our relationship with God, one another, and all of creation. Parishes are encouraged to include a Prayer of the Faithful in their Sunday Masses during this season.
