Formerly part of Wellington Archdiocese, it embraces the whole of Canterbury and most of Westland in the South Island, as well as the Chatham Islands, the first place in the world to be touched by the sun each da

y. Since 1887 the Diocese has had 11 bishops. The mother church of the Diocese is the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christchurch, which in 2005 celebrated its centenary. Presently, the Diocese has 45 parishes served by secular clergy and priests of the Society of Mary. In addition there are 8 Religious Congregations of women and 4 Congregations of men engaged in pastoral works of various kinds. The Catholic population of the Diocese is 62,715. The diocese covers 51,780 square kilometres (or 20,000 square miles). The diocesan patron saint is St John the Baptist.

On Saturday, Bishop Michael celebrated the Mass of Consecration of Virgins and consecrated Katrina de Roo and Jeanette Hancock as brides of Christ. This is one of the oldest forms of consecrated life for women in the Catholic Church, existing since apostolic times. Katrina and Jeanette received the title of the Church, bride of Christ, and became sacred persons, they will remain living in the world in the secular state, providing for their own living, and witnessing to God.

Last week, Bishop Michael joined fellow bishops, members of our diocese and others from across the country for the Rebuild My Church series hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton, NZ, featuring Dr Mary Healy.
Dr Healy reminded attendees that God has placed each of us here for a purpose and called us to live and proclaim our faith with courage. She invited us to rediscover the Holy Spirit as a living, Divine Person who empowers the Church for mission. Dr Healy shared that the Gospel is not just a message, but God’s living power at work today, renewing the Church and transforming hearts.
As she powerfully summed up the mission:
“We’re not rebuilding His Church. He’s rebuilding His Church.”
