Cession Community

Cession Community We’re a community that values one another, strives to serve the community and engages faith in a creative, relevant way. We like to sing.

We meet on Sunday evenings from 5pm because it works for people who value spending Sunday daytime with family and friends. We share a meal together because we like spending time. We do lots of creative, multi-media, participative, multi-sensory and engaging stuff to get to the heart of who God is and who we are. Someone, often one of our pastors, will share a message applying the Bible to life. We're pretty relaxed and everyone is welcome wherever they're at.

Kia ora e te whānau,

Like all of you, we've been following the progress of Cyclone Vaianu and the current advice from Met Service.

After careful consideration, we've decided to cancel our Worship Gathering this evening. Whilst things may seem quieter out there right now, high winds are expected later this afternoon, making travel by road more treacherous.

Please keep safe out there and continue to follow advice from Met Service ( https://www.facebook.com/MetService )and Auckland Emergency Management ( https://www.facebook.com/aklcdem/ ) .

This Sunday we celebrate Easter with our now Annual Whānau Fun Night with egg and spoon races (watch out for the trickery Nicola and Melissa have scrambled up for it this year!), cookie decorating and prizes that are full of Easter treats.

With this service including a bit of extra fun, alongside our normal worship time and sermon, this is a great service to invite friends and whānau to.

As we head towards the end of January, the year continues to settle into its rythumsa and routines. This Sunday we resume our rythum of meeting together on Sunday evenings.
At this stage, the plan is to meet at Eastern Beach Reserve (Mcleans end) at 5pm for a BBQ. There is a rain plan so if it questionable, keep your eyes out the change of plan.

If you are looking for somewhere to worship tomorrow East City Wesleyan Church has a service starting at 10am.

Advent 2025: The Longing
The Season of Advent is a season of longing. It invites us to wait in hopeful anticipation for the birth of Christ. The Advent candles we light each week remind us that light sparks in unexpected places.

We kick off in week one with Longing for Hope. During Advent, we're offering from some readings, artworks and prayers for reflection and meditation as we move through the Advent Season. This weeks resources are included below.

Isaiah 2:1-5 | Ihāia 2:1-5
Psalm 122 | Waiata 122
Romans 13:11-14 | Rōma 13:11-14
Matthew 24:36-44 | Matiu 24:36-44

Look: 'Tū Whenua a Kura | The Lighthouse' by Michael Parekowhai - https://www.aucklandpublicart.com/artworks/3986

Michael Parekōwhai describes his work The Lighthouse as "the small house that holds the whole universe." The interior of the house is furnished with highly reflective surfaces and features clusters of brightly coloured neon lights that represent star constellations. The lights draw your gaze toward the ceiling and evoke the idea of ahi kā; that home fires are burning, and the house is warm with people.
The lighthouse is a free to view public sculpture work on Queens Wharf in Auckland City, if you've never visited we highly recommend it.

What images of hope do you see in this work?

Listen: 'Lord Remind Me' by Jon Guerra

Reflect:
What are you looking toward with a sense of hope in this season?
Are there areas of your life where you struggle to feel hopeful?
What would it look like to bring hope into these places?
What would it take to make this happen?

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰'𝐬 𝐆𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥 (𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟐): 𝐀 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐝𝐨𝐦
For centuries, great teachers have used stories to illustrate important truths about life and human nature. Jesus, too, often used stories known as parables to announce the Kingdom of God and reveal himself and his mission to those who would listen.

In Part 2 of this series we explore two final parables from Matthew and the invitation and challenge they offer us to live in a generous kingdom.

Tomorrow at cession:
BREATHE SUNDAY - 9 November
Shared Meal - bring a plate of food to share and with our powers combined we'll feed the community. This shared meal will operate on a 'bring what you can' philosophy. If you're not able to bring something or forget, it's all good - there will be plenty to go around.
Sharing Table - too many fejoas? and abundance of rosemary - bring them along to the sharing table and share the love.
Open Sharing - there will be opportunities for the community to share their own stories about what God is doing in their lives. There's no pressure to share, but an open invitation to everyone in the community to share.
Worship & Prayer - On Breathe Sundays we'll provide extra space for worship and prayer.
