All mask requirements have been removed, except for visitors in certain healthcare settings.

• You must wear a mask when visiting most healthcare services like hospitals, a doctor’s clinic, pharmacies, community/iwi health providers and aged care and disability-related residential facilities. You do not need to wear a mask if you are a resident, a patient, or receiving care at a healthcare service, or if the health service is a mental health or addiction service. More information: https://covid19.govt.nz/prepare-and-stay-safe/keep-up-healthy-habits/face-masks/wearing-a-face-mask/

• Household Contacts of positive cases are encouraged to wear a mask when leaving home, especially when visiting vulnerable people, using public transport or in a crowded indoor space: https://covid19.govt.nz/testing-and-tracing/contact-tracing/household-contacts/ -you-need-to-do

• Some places, such as special events or marae, may still ask you to wear a mask. Please check before you go.

• Some employers may still require workers to wear masks due to their responsibilities under health and safety legislation. Please check with your employer.

• If you cannot wear a mask due to disabilities or health conditions, you can still apply for a Mask Exemption Pass. It can help make it easier to explain that a mask is unsuitable for you: https://covid19.govt.nz/prepare-and-stay-safe/keep-up-healthy-habits/face-masks/wearing-a-face-mask/ -you-cannot-wear-a-face-mask

• You can still pick up free medical masks (and P2/N95 masks for those at higher risk of severe illness). You do not need to be unwell or have COVID-19 symptoms. You still need to order through the Request free COVID-19 RAT kits website. More information: https://covid19.govt.nz/prepare-and-stay-safe/keep-up-healthy-habits/face-masks/wearing-a-face-mask/ -face-masks

• Masks remain a key defence against COVID-19. We encourage you to wear a mask in crowded places such as public transport, or when visiting people at high risk. We encourage everyone to respect those who continue to wear masks.

You can find more information on masks here: https://covid19.govt.nz/prepare-and-stay-safe/keep-up-healthy-habits/face-masks/wearing-a-face-mask/

New Zealand will remain at the Orange traffic light setting, while hospitalisations remain elevated and pressure on the health system continues through winter.

There’s still significant pressure on hospitals from winter illnesses, so current measures have an ongoing role to play in reducing the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations.

There are no changes to isolation requirements. The next review will be in September.

Under Orange you are required to wear a mask in most indoor settings. You can visit cafes and bars, attend gatherings and events, and go to gyms and hairdressers — with no capacity limits or distancing requirements.

New measures are being rolled out to help tackle COVID-19 and flu to reduce pressure on the health system and health workers.

Modelling suggests we’re at the beginning of a second Omicron wave, with the more infectious BA.5 variant becoming the dominant strain in the community.

There has been a significant increase in cases over the past two weeks. The biggest jump is in cases amongst those aged 65 and over. That in turn has led to an increase in hospital occupancy.

Everyone should do three things to stay safe and reduce the spread of the virus over the rest of winter: get vaccinated if you haven’t already, wear a mask in indoor settings and crowded places and isolate when sick.

In addition, these changes will be made to help keep people safe:

➡️ Antiviral medicines

Antiviral medications can reduce the seriousness of COVID-19, so over time these will be made more available via pharmacies to those most likely to end up in hospital, without the need for a prescription.

To speed up access to antivirals, GPs will be able to provide back pocket prescriptions. This means at-risk patients for acute respiratory illnesses can be pre-approved and have their prescription ready should they become unwell and need the medicine immediately.

Pharmac will also broaden the eligibility criteria to enable more people from higher risk groups to access antiviral medications.

Pharmac will be making further announcements about this today.

➡️ Expanded access to RATs and free medical masks

RAT collection sites will be turned into free RAT and mask collection sites. Packs of medical masks will be provided free along with free RATs for everyone from all current community providers, including marae, testing stations, and some local pharmacies.

There are no criteria, you don’t need to be unwell or have symptoms.

P2/N95 masks will be available for clinically vulnerable and high risk individuals.

➡️ Schools will be provided with mask supplies and more support for ventilation and winter heating costs

10 million child-size masks will be available for year 4-7 students and up to 30,000 masks a week for all other students and school staff. Extra funding is also being provided to support better ventilation over winter.

If you’re going away these school holidays, make sure you have a plan in case you catch COVID-19, or become a Household Contact.

• Plan how to get home safely to isolate — you can only return home if you can drive there, you cannot use public transport, ferries, or fly.
• Talk through the plan with your travelling companions.
• If you cannot drive home, it is likely you will need to stay where you are for your isolation period.

➡️ If you get symptoms, get tested immediately
If you get cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms while away from home, get tested immediately. Do not wait until you get home.

➡️ If you can’t get home
If you need to stay put, please contact your accommodation provider immediately.
Have a plan:
• who can look after your house if necessary
• who can care for your pets
• what things to take with you to entertain you while isolating
• have enough money to cover an extended time away from home, for example accommodation costs
• make a list of medical information — include names, ages, NHI numbers, any medical conditions, and medication or medical supplies.

More advice on isolating in temporary accommodation can be found here: https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-health-advice-public/advice-people-covid-19/covid-19-isolating-others

➡️ If you can go home
If you can drive home in a private or work vehicle, then you can do so as long as you can make it home without an overnight stop or interisland travel.
You will need to make as few stops as possible, so you need to plan:
• your route home
• how you would get fuel — you should only stop at a contactless petrol station
• supplies for the journey home to reduce the number of stops you make.
