THE ZEAL THAT STOPPED GOD'S ANGER - NUMBERS 25:1-13 NLT
QUESTION:
• CAN A RIGHTEOUS ZEAL STILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND CHANGE A SITUATION TODAY?
The small beginning of compromise - v1-v3
It can be subtle or dangerous.
“While the Israelites were camped at Acacia Grove, some of the men defiled themselves by having sexual relations with local Moabite women. These women invited them to attend sacrifices to their gods, so the Israelites feasted with them and worshiped the gods of Moab. In this way, Israel joined in the worship of Baal of Peor, causing the Lord’s anger to blaze against his people.”
Numbers 25:1-3 NLT
AM, I TOLERATING SMALL COMPROMISES THAT PULL ME AWAY FROM GOD?
1. No compromise with God's holiness. - v4-v5 ; v8-v9
WHEN GOD'S PEOPLE IGNORE HIS HOLINESS, HIS WRATH AND JUDGMENT ARE CONSEQUENCES, NOT RANDOM PUNISHMENT.
GOD'S HOLINESS IS NOT OPTIONAL.
THERE'S NO COMPROMISE WITH GOD'S HOLINESS.
“Then Joshua and all the Israelites took Achan, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, tent, and everything he had, and they brought them to the valley of Achor. Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The Lord will now bring trouble on you.” And all the Israelites stoned Achan and his family and burned their bodies.” Joshua 7:24-25 NLT
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17 NKJV
2. The zeal that moves to action - v6-8
“Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into his tent, right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as everyone was weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.” Numbers 25:6 NLT
RIGHTEOUS ZEAL ACTS WHEN OTHERS HESITATE.
RIGHTEOUS ZEAL MOVES US FROM WATCHING TO DOING.
FEELING BAD WITHOUT OBEDIENCE DOES NOT CHANGE ANYTHING.
RIGHTEOUS ZEAL IS NOT ABOUT EMOTIONS - BUT ACTIONS IN HONOR TO GOD.
“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”” Esther 4:14 NKJV
3. The zeal that brings God's approval - God honours the zeal of Phinehas – v.10-13
A. there is a special covenant that Phinehas received - peace (overflowing blessing)
“Now tell him that I am making my special covenant of peace with him.” Numbers 25:12 NLT
B. He was given a permanent right of priesthood and to his family - v13
C. He made the Israelites to be right with God -
TAKE-AWAY:
GOD STILL HONOURS FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE
GOD IS STILL LOOKING FOR HEARTS ON FIRE FOR HIM
LET’S GO OUT OF THIS PLACE WITH A HEART ON FIRE FOR GOD.
