Rev Kaurasi Lagi's Ministry at Onehunga Cooperating Parish.
The Lagi Family of Kaurasi, Ruby, Kafoa, Sulu and Manase had been at OCP for 6 years. This commenced in February 2019 and concluded January 2025. It has been a full on Ministry.
In the first three years, I was serving the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand as the national Moderator. This meant that the Rev Kaurasi "hit the road running", in his Ministry at OCP. It was a huge task and a major learning path for a new minister in his first placement. And especially so with the nature of a Union Parish, made up of Methodist Church, Christian Church and Presbyterian Church, formed in Advent 1996. The Rev Lagi rose to the occasion. His warm nature and permanent smile, and a positive attitude was appealing and pleasing to this new community of faith. He was consistent and came across as a caring, loving servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. His Ministry was build on his positive nature and with a clean heart.
In the Ministry at OCP, ethnic languages is a big part of this set up. Beside English, there was also Samoan, Cook Island and Niuean. This meant conducting and leading Worship Services in the languages of OCP, every month. There were 6 or 7 Worship Services each month. Most Sundays there were two Services, one in English and another in a Pacific Island language.
The Rev Lagi did not speak any of the PI languages of OCP. He rose to the challenge well.
We met most Tuesday for Ministry conversation, sharing, reflecting, planning and praying. We divided the Ministry of Onehunga Cooperating Parish between us. We agreed to having different days off. We tried to cover the whole of OCP, not just between us, but with the wider leadership of OCP. The Rev Kaurasi Lagi took care of Youth Ministry, Pastoral Visitation (Home Communion), Handicraft Groups, Onehunga wide (Ministers, Priests, Clergies) Ministry.
The Rev Lagi was also prominent in the Auckland Methodist Synod, Chair of Auckland Regional Forum, and on the representative on the Standing Committee of the UCANZ.
My dear brother Rev Kaurasi Lagi, it has been an honour and a privilege to have shared Ministry with you. You are a special and a loving servant of the Most High. Thank you for our full and challenging years together. It has been extraordinary and a pleasant and a memorable experience. Thank you to Mama Ruby for her support and encouragement. Without our wives we would be in the forest still. Blessings to your beautiful children Kafoa, Sulu, and Manase. Stand firm and supportive of your parents. Thank you for your love, respect and servant heart.
Our love and our prayers,
Very Rev Fakaofo, Mama Ruth Risati and our children, and Kalos, Jonas, Lily.
And also the Faith Community of Onehunga Cooperating Parish.
