No screws. No nails. No metal.
Just centuries of woodworking tradition brought back to life. Watch Dave hand-fit the rail handle to our Voyage casket using a traditional technique called Round Mortise and Tenon. Grain-matched to perfection, secured with a wedge and sanded to a seamless timber finish.
There is an art to building this way. Made for eco-friendly natural burial, sympathetic to Jewish burial practices and for those who appreciate something truly special.

Craftsmanship is not a feature at Return to Sender Caskets, it's the foundation of everything we make.

Did you know not all affordable caskets are made from the same materials?
Some are MDF. Some are untreated plywood. And sometimes MDF actually costs more.
At Return to Sender we use untreated plywood, because we believe every family deserves a better choice for the earth, whatever their budget.
Our fully independent research backs it up. A MDF casket produces nearly 70% more greenhouse gas emissions than an untreated plywood one across its full lifecycle.

Meet our Pure and Simple casket.

Natural plywood you can write on, draw on and make completely theirs.

Pure and Simple.
Kind to families.
Kind to the earth.

Every life has its own rhythm.
The Archetype was made to honour that.
Behind every casket is a team of people who care about what they do.
Real hands. Real craft. Real heart.
A rail handle crafted so more loved ones can gather close.
A natural interior, warm, honest and beautiful.
Timber sourced right here in New Zealand.
Made with love. For the people you love.
Elegant. Graceful. Beautiful.

Behind every casket is a family. That thought never leaves us.
It's why every detail is crafted with one intention:

To honour the family.

This is how we create the curved rail handle on our Archetype casket. Every piece of timber is checked, soaked and gently steamed into shape over several hours. Then it’s left to rest until the curve sets and the wood holds its new form.
Elegant.
Graceful.
Beautiful.

You trust us with something that truly matters. At Return To Sender, we never take that lightly.

🍩 WE ARE 4 DAYS AWAY FROM A VERY IMPORTANT EVENT 🍩

Let us tell you a little story about loose change, one very dedicated team member and our love for donuts.
We have a spare change jar at work, just a place for the random coins that end up at the bottom of bags and pockets. Nothing fancy.
Our colleague Myron has taken it upon himself to monitor every Krispy Kreme deal and Too Good To Go alert going. Last week, Krispy Kreme came through with a cracker of a deal. We looked at the jar. We counted. IT WAS ENOUGH. πŸ™Œ
Not only did we book it, we booked it for the Friday before the long weekend, because why have a surprise donut day when you can have a COUNTDOWN donut day going into a long weekend?!
The poster is up. The jar did its job. Myron is a hero. And in 4 days, we roll.
Happy counting, everyone! πŸŽ‰

Beauty without apology. Craft without compromise.

The interior of the Archetype Casket was made to be seen.

Unlike many caskets designed with fabric linings and trim to cover the wood, the Archetype celebrates the natural beauty of the timber itself. The contrasting wooden inserts, the grain and the craftsmanship. These are part of the features of this casket.

This opens up meaningful choices for families. Some prefer the simplicity and honesty of natural wood. Others have personal or spiritual beliefs that guide them toward minimal decoration. Some simply want the casket to reflect who their loved one was, authentic, beautiful and real.

When a family says, 'We want something that matches the values of our loved one who had a lifetime passion for timber,' you know exactly what to offer them.

A casket designed for choice. Designed for truth. πŸ’™

One of our favourite features of the Archetype Casket and one many people haven't seen before.

Unlike a traditional casket with six fixed handles, the Archetype features a continuous rail handle, gently steam bent to follow the natural curve of the casket.

What does that mean in practice? When a family wants extra hands to carry, perhaps a grandchild or two, or one more person who matters deeply, there's room for them. With proper support and the space they need.

It's a detail that's easy to miss, but for the right family, it can mean everything.

And if you'd like more than the traditional six pallbearers, don't be afraid to let your funeral director know. They will always listen and help find the right option for you and your family. πŸ’™

At Return to Sender we believe every part of a casket deserves care, even the parts most people never notice.

This is a handle block. A small piece of New Zealand pine that sits between the casket and the rail handle. Our craftsman Dave, sands every edge because he cares. The same way he approaches everything he makes.
Not because anyone's checking. Because we all understand who these caskets are for.
Every casket is made right here in New Zealand, by people who care deeply about what they do and why they do it.

It's just how we do it!

Our Archetype casket is handcrafted in two beautiful locally sourced New Zealand timbers. 🌿 Solid NZ Pine or NZ Silver Beech (Tawhai), sourced from Southland's forests. Each finished with a subtle wax to bring out the natural grain. Because every piece of timber is different, no two caskets are ever the same.

Silver Beech on the left, Pine on the right, which is your favourite?

Wait! You can fix that with an iron?! πŸ”₯
Wood got a minor dent? No problem.
Cover it with a damp cloth, run a hot iron over it, and watch the wood bounce back like magic.
Working with NZ solid pine every day, we know it dents easily but it recovers just as fast. This little trick saves you a whole lot of sanding.
