Tuesday 8 September 2026 — Accession Day

Today marks Accession Day, the anniversary of King Charles III’s accession to the Throne.

This day reminds us that constitutional authority is not merely personal, but institutional and continuous. One reign ends, another begins, yet the office endures. In that continuity there is a public sign that lawful authority is held in trust, not possessed as private power.

For the Church, such a day is also a summons to prayer. We pray for the Sovereign, and for all entrusted with authority, that they may govern with wisdom, justice, humility, and restraint. We pray also for the common life of the realm, that public office may be exercised for service, peace, and the good of all.

May those who bear authority remember that they are accountable before God, and may the people entrusted to their care flourish in justice and concord.

Creator God,
you have made us

St Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome and Teacher of the Faith — Thursday 3 September

Today the Church remembers St Gregory the Great, bishop, pastor, and teacher.
Gregory became Bishop of Rome at the end of the sixth century. He reformed administration, cared for the poor, wrote influential works on pastoral ministry, and sent Augustine and his companions to preach the Gospel in England.

Gregory described pastoral authority as service and called himself “servant of the servants of God”. His witness reminds the Church that sound teaching, ordered worship, practical administration, and care for those in need are not competing tasks. Together they form faithful oversight.

May all who lead the Church exercise authority as service, joining wisdom with compassion and prayer with practical care.

The Martyrs of Papua New Guinea — Wednesday 2 September

Today the Church remembers the martyrs of Papua New Guinea.

We remember clergy, teachers, missionaries, medical workers, and lay Christians who remained with the people entrusted to them during violence in 1901 and during the Japanese occupation in 1942. Many refused opportunities to escape because they would not abandon their communities.

Their witness belongs to the Church of our Pacific region. It reveals a ministry of presence: not heroic self-display, but fidelity to relationships, responsibilities, and people in danger. They remained because the shepherd does not desert the flock.

May their courage strengthen the Church in Oceania, and may we be faithful to those entrusted to our care. Holy martyrs of Papua New Guinea, pray for us.

St Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne, Missionary — Monday 31 August

Today we remember St Aidan, missionary bishop and founder of the monastery on Lindisfarne.

Invited by King Oswald to help restore Christianity in Northumbria, Aidan travelled from place to place on foot, preaching the Gospel, teaching, establishing churches and caring for the poor. He was known for gentleness, simplicity and patience.

Aidan’s mission was rooted not in power or display, but in prayer, community, hospitality and personal example. He listened before he preached and lived among the people whom he served.

May God give us the same humility, generosity and missionary courage, that the good news of Christ may be made known through both our words and our lives.

God of Israel old and new,

The Beheading of St John the Baptist — Saturday 29 August

Today the Church remembers the martyrdom of St John the Baptist.

John was imprisoned and killed because he spoke truth about the misuse of power. Herod feared him, yet yielded to vanity, manipulation, and the desire not to lose face before his guests. A prophet’s life was sacrificed to preserve a ruler’s pride.

This commemoration is a sober warning about the moral cowardice that can inhabit public life. It honours those who speak truth at personal cost and reminds the Church that prophetic witness must not be silenced by convenience, patronage, or fear.

May God give us courage to speak truth with integrity and to resist every abuse of power. St John the Baptist, pray for us.

St Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, Teacher of the Faith — Friday 28 August

Today we remember St Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential theologians and pastors of the early Church.

After years of searching, ambition and spiritual restlessness, Augustine was brought to Christian faith through Scripture, prayer and the patient witness of others, especially his mother Monica. He was baptised in 387 and later became Bishop of Hippo in North Africa.

Augustine wrote profoundly about grace, sin, freedom, love, the Church and the human longing for God. His life reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of grace and that our deepest desires find their fulfilment in God.

St Monica, Mother of Augustine — Thursday 27 August

Today the Church remembers St Monica, woman of prayer and mother of Augustine.

Monica endured sorrow within her family and prayed patiently for the conversion of her son. Her love was not passive or possessive. She accompanied Augustine through years of restlessness while trusting that grace could reach him beyond the limits of her own power.
Her commemoration speaks to all who pray for those they love and cannot control. Faithful intercession does not guarantee that events will unfold as we expect, but it places both the beloved and the one who prays within the mercy of God.

May God sustain all who wait, grieve, and pray for others, and give them Monica’s perseverance, wisdom, and hope. St Monica, pray for us.

St Bartholomew the Apostle — Monday 24 August

Today the Church remembers St Bartholomew the Apostle.

Bartholomew is one of those apostles about whom Scripture tells us little. Yet that very obscurity has its own significance. The Church was not built only through the visible labours of the great and famous, but also through the obedience of those whose names are remembered more than their deeds.

His feast reminds us that ordinary obedience builds the Church. Most Christian faithfulness is not dramatic. It is found in constancy, prayer, service, truthfulness, and the willingness to follow Christ without needing prominence. The Kingdom of God is advanced not only by great public acts, but by lives quietly given to the Lord.
