Youth advancing religious diversity:

The Religious Diversity Centre's ‘Youth Leadership Council’ Project leaders have been consulting young people across the country over the last six months to hear more of a youth perspective on religious diversity in Aotearoa New Zealand. Thank you to the young people from various faith affiliations who joined us. As a result of these consultations, we will now be inviting applications for Ngā Rangatahi o Māramatanga, the Youth Leadership Council. This is open to New Zealand residents aged 16-35 who are passionate about the work of building understanding and acceptance of religious diversity throughout our society. They can be of any religious affiliation (including atheist/agnostic) and should be available for 1.5 hours every six weeks, over a two-year tenure. We will be providing induction and training. You do not need to have been previously involved in the RDC or the workshops in order to apply.

Attached is the recruitment poster and application form. The deadline for applications is 9 October 2021, after which shortlisted candidates will receive an interview request (either in person or online).

Young people are really mindful and overwhelmed by the labels they have to carry - whether it be their ethnicity, religion or gender. The workshops are not about interrogating your labels, but inviting you to share what you are most comfortable sharing so we can support in building a better future together.

As a center for research excellence we are deeply fascinated by data and indexes. Like us have you been wondering which region or country is ranked the most religiously diverse?

Pew Research Center published this helpful demographic study that you might find useful.

A new report measures religious diversity by the percentage of each country's population in eight categories — Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, the unaffiliated, folk religionists and members of other religions.

As the team progresses this work of engaging our rangatahi one of the key things we are hearing from wider stakeholders is whether this mahi will complement existing initiatives. The answer to that is - absolutely!

The consultation and establishment of a Youth Leadership Council in RDC will provide a platform for young people to support and participate in existing initiatives whilst working nationally and having a strategic oversight.

Support this kaupapa by sharing the information with a young person you know.
