Life surely fades, withers, and comes to an end,
just like a stalk of sugarcane that, once cut,
must eventually dry up and lose its freshness.

For what do we enjoy this life?
For what do we seek pleasure and amusement?
What lasting benefit do these fleeting joys bring?

For what do we tirelessly gather wealth and possessions?
For what do we hold tightly to wife and children?

All things are impermanent—
unstable, uncertain, and unsatisfactory.
The wise reflect deeply, understand this truth,
and learn to let go."**
