Shakyamuni Buddha, also known simply as Buddha or Siddhartha Gautama, was a spiritual teacher who lived in NEPAL sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BC. He is the founder of Buddhism, one of the world's major religions.
Born into a noble family in Lumbini , Siddhartha lived a life of luxury as a prince. However, he became disillusioned with the suffering he witnessed outside the palace walls. Determined to understand the nature of suffering and find a path to liberation, he renounced his princely life and set out on a spiritual quest.
After years of rigorous ascetic practices and meditation, Siddhartha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, under the Bodhi tree. He realized the Four Noble Truths: the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the cessation of suffering, and the truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. This event marked his transformation into the Buddha, meaning "the awakened one."
For the remainder of his life, the Buddha traveled across northern India, teaching his insights and establishing a community of monks and nuns (the Sangha). He delivered numerous discourses, known as sutras, which form the basis of Buddhist teachings.
The core teachings of Buddhism revolve around the principles of impermanence, suffering, and non-self, as well as the practice of mindfulness, meditation, and ethical conduct. The Buddha's teachings are encapsulated in the Dharma, which serves as the guide for followers seeking to attain enlightenment and liberation from the cycle of birth and death (samsara).
The Buddha passed away at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, India. His teachings have since spread worldwide, influencing countless individuals and cultures across millennia.
