Birgunj is the second major city of Nepal after its capital Kathmandu. It is located in the southern main Terai. It is well known for its industries, trade and agricultural junction. Nepal’s 60% of industries and trade are occupied by Birgunj itself. Heavy government duties, taxes and revenues are collected by the government from this city. Before Birgunj, there was a place called Amlekhgunj (36 k
m away from Birgunj) which was developed in the beginning. There were no roads, living homes but only big stones on the path to Amlekhgunj. Only horse carts were on the move. India’s border Raxaul (Bihar) joins the southern part of Birgunj. From Raxaul there was a small railway line up to Amlekhgunj via Birgunj. By that train all the daily needful products were carried along with the people. Products for trade and merchandise were supplied at this point. For the first time The Gurudwara Sahib was enlightened at Amlekhgunj where there were people and markets. After some time Birgunj city started developing with markets, population density, business and agriculture. People shifted to Birgunj and also The Gurudwara Sahib was shifted to a Gurmukh Sindhi family for some time. Then again The Gurudwara Sahib was shifted to the plot near to the electricity authority (Power house) where now the G.H.P school also stands. This Gurudwara Sahib has a small area with no proper textures, interiors and designs. The environment looks outdated and congested. Moreover the langar hall (community food hall) is also small with a space fit for just limited sangats. So the sangat of Birgunj decided to build a new Gurudwara with all the defaults corrected from the previous one. This Gurudwara is supposed to get constructed about 250 meters away from the old one, on the way to Gautam School and the Narayani stadium. The construction of this Gurudwara started 15 years ago. Till now just half of the work is completed due to the lack of financial support and proper control and it requires billions of rupees. Previously in Birgunj, there lived about 500 Sikh families. But due to political disturbances, lack of social security and lack of Sikh rights 90% of them migrated to other countries mostly India and abroad. Those who are left are working and struggling here. Because of this reduction in Sikh mass we are helpless and unable to complete the new Gurudwara sahib. From Birgunj, 200 km away there lies The Patna sahib, capital of Bihar (India). This place is very holy and blessed for the Sikhs as it is the birthplace of Shree Guru Gobind singh ji. Millions of people worldwide visit this place yearly to get blessed. So those sangat wish to visit Kathmandu (Nepal) via Birgunj mainly to mark the site of Guru Nanak dev ji’s feet shrine, which is located at Balaju at Gurudwara named as Guru Nanak Math. Birgunj falls on their way so the sangat wish to stay here at Birgunj’s Gurudwara at night or to have a rest but this is not convenient to them as there is very limited facility of stay at Birgunj’s Gurudwara. No spacious rooms or Refreshments are available. So the Completion of The New Gurudwara is a must. This supports our tradition of service, enhances our culture, religion and even promotes tourism that can help our nation a lot.
