Introduction
Since time immemorial, Nepal has been known as a land of many deities. Situated on the lap of the might Himalayas, Nepal is, among others, a land of devotees of different religion faith and traditions, all cooperating and co existing together towards attainment of humanity and
protection of civilized society. The Hindus, among others, worship lord Shiva as the god of gods and goddesses. As described in thee purans, holy texts and many inscriptions, Shiva is the god of destruction of evil and protector of invaluable creation in the universe. The purans and the Hindu epics – the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and mythologies speak volumes about the power and greatness of mahadeva, who is known by different names, such as the Shiva, the mahadeva, the Shankar, the pashupatinath and the like. The two-line Sanskrit excerpt from shivapura-snatkumarsanhita 6/21-30 describes
Him as the supreme lord, the destroyer as well as protector of all living creatures-human and non -human. The lord, an incarnation of self –certain, is highly esteemed among lord Brahama, the creation and lord Vishnu, the protector, who are sad to have shared Shiva’s inside , vision and wisdom on the creation of the universe. Devils and demons are said to have suffered disastrous consequences for blaspheming the lord. In short, the lord is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. Devout Hindus, who worship different deities, worship Shiva with unfathomable devotion and veneration for attainment of eternal peace, immaterial progress and prosperity of mankind on earth. Apart from regular worship and prayer, devotees, on special holy occasions, both from home and abroad, throng the Tempe of lord Shiva to have his darshan(visit, appearance) and offer worship. On the occasion of mahashivaratri, the whole of the pashupatinath zone and other places with the cult of Shiva worship wear a festive look with an aura of holiness and devotion thought the temple of lord pashupatinath. Men and women taking brata (fasting) after a holy dip in the river, worship of the lord, and the get-together of the sadhus (hermits) mostly from neighboring India and throughout the world constitute the special feature of the occasion. But no one knows for sure the authentic data of er****on of the temple of lord pashpatinath. But the mighty and majestic edifice _ a shrine glittering in gold with silver gates on all sides, stand above the bank of the Holy River of Baghmati, the purity and sanctity of which far exceeds the holiness of Bhagirathi Ganga as describe in the following Sanskrit lines:
With the beauty and grandeur of the temple and the holiness of the river, enhancing each other’s eminence and magnificence, pashupatinath stands till date as one of the world’s greatest pilgrimage destination.
