How to cultivate a healthy mind
with Geshe Tenzin Gurmyi

The mind gets heavy when there's too much in it β€” old worries, unfinished thoughts, the noise of everyday life. In these teachings, Geshe la offers a way through that weight, drawing on decades of study across every major Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

In 2009, geshe la graduated top of his class with the rare RimΓ© (Non-Sectarian) Geshe degree, and taught at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics for 7 years. He currently serves as a Teacher at the Serkong Institute for Buddhist Studies.

Meeting Death with Awareness: Of Self & Others
with Ven Thubten Khadro

During this talk we will explore the Buddhist understanding of the death process and how to prepare the mind for our own passing and of our loved ones, with greater clarity, wisdom and compassion. We will reflect on impermanence, and how awareness of death can enrich the way we live. If there is one certainty in life, it is death, with preparation, can become a profound and peaceful journey.

What a beautiful gathering it was! We were so grateful to welcome Ven. Thubten Khadro for an interactive talk exploring emotional intelligence through a Buddhist lens.

Together, we explored practical tools β€” meditation, self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy β€” for meeting our emotions with clarity instead of being swept away by them, especially the difficult ones. There was rich discussion, moments of genuine reflection, and a real sense of community in the room.

A heartfelt thank you to Ven. Thubten Khadro for sharing such grounded, practical wisdom, and to everyone who joined us in cultivating a calmer mind and a warmer heart. πŸ’›

A Day of Purification with Ven. Thubten Dekyong πŸ™

Yesterday we were blessed to welcome Ven. Thubten Dekyong β€” the first nun ordained at Kopan Nunnery in 1979 and a devoted disciple of Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche β€” for a profound teaching on purification, one of the most powerful and transformative practices on the Buddhist path.

With the clarity and warmth that comes from decades of practice and service β€” including her years translating for great masters such as Geshe Lama Kunchog, Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche, and Denma Lochoe Rinpoche β€” Ven. Thubten Dekyong guided us through the true meaning of purification: not merely ritual, but a deep inner process of healing and renewal.

She explained how all beings accumulate negative karma through harmful actions, words, and thoughts, creating obscurations that cloud the mind and obstruct the path to liberation. Through the four opponent powers β€” sincere regret, refuge and compassion, the antidote practice, and the resolve not to repeat β€” we learned how to actively dissolve these imprints and restore the mind's natural purity.

Through mantra recitation, prostrations, confession, and meditation, the room was filled with a palpable sense of lightness, peace, and renewed energy β€” a gift we give to ourselves and to all beings.

We are deeply grateful to Ven. Thubten Dekyong for sharing her wisdom and guidance with our community. 🌸

Swipe through to relive the moments from this special day.

Join us for a profound exploration of purification, one of the most powerful and transformative practices in the Buddhist path. Through clear and accessible teachings, Ven. Thubten Dekyong will guide us in understanding how to cleanse negative karma, remove inner obscurations, and open the heart to greater clarity, compassion, and freedom.

In Buddhism, purification is not merely a ritual, it is a deep inner process of healing and renewal. All beings accumulate negative karma through harmful actions, words, and thoughts, which create obscurations that cloud the mind and obstruct the path to liberation.

Through purification practice, we apply the four opponent powers to actively dissolve these imprints and restore the natural purity of the mind.

The Heart of Wisdom: Teachings on the Heart Sutra - PART II
with Charok Lama

For over 2,000 years, the Heart Sutra has guided practitioners toward freedom from suffering through the understanding of emptiness and compassion. In just a few verses, it holds the entire heart of Buddhist wisdom.

Charok Lama β€” a recognised Tibetan Buddhist teacher born in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal, trained for over 20 years at Kopan and Sera Jhe Monastery β€” brings these timeless teachings to life with warmth, clarity, and deep personal insight.

OBS: We'll be sharing the recordings of all three sessions in case you missed Part I.

Earlier in June, HBMC was honored to welcome Charok Lama for Part I of our Heart Sutra teachings β€” a text that has guided practitioners toward freedom from suffering for over 2,000 years. In just a handful of verses, it carries the entire heart of Buddhist wisdom: emptiness, compassion, and the nature of reality itself.

Charok Lama (Ngawang Rigdzin Gyatso Rinpoche) brought these profound teachings to life with the warmth and clarity he's known for. Born in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal, he was recognized at age two as the reincarnation of Kusho Mangden, a revered Nyingma yogi. At eight, he moved to Sera Je Monastery in South India to pursue his geshe studies β€” and has spent over 20 years training between there and Kopan.

A full house joined us onsite and online for a day of deep reflection on emptiness and the path of the bodhisattva.

Missed it? The recording of Part I will be shared with everyone who registers for Part II β€” happening Sunday, July 12

What a beautiful day at HBMC! On June 6th, we were honored to host Geshema Jangchup Gyalmo, who guided us through the Eight Verses of Training the Mind β€” one of Tibetan Buddhism's most cherished and practical teachings.

Geshema Jangchup Gyalmo's own journey is remarkable: born in the village of Tsum on the Nepal-Tibet border, she joined Kopan Nunnery in 1992, completed her Geshema degree in South India in 2016 under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and went on to study Ta**ra at Gyudtod Ta***ic University. She now serves on the Geshema examination committee.

Her teaching reminded us that Buddhism isn't just philosophy β€” it's a daily practice. Seeing others as more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel. Turning criticism into growth. Meeting suffering, ours and others', with an open heart. Practicing giving and taking in even the smallest moments.

Grateful to everyone who joined us onsite and online for this practical, heart-opening day. 🌸
