Established in the 19th century, preserving the precious dharma lineage and serving Tibetan and Nepal Himalayan communities for over a century. Nyinchung Monastery is located about three to four miles above Namgung Monastery, which is one of the three famous monastic seats known as Hrab, Margom, and Namgung in the inner Dolpo region. It is a special retreat center where the throne holders and high
lamas of Namgung Monastery practice meditation. In the 19th century, Nyinchung Orgyen Chozang, who was born in Karang Pun-Nying, saw that this hermitage of Nyinchung was suitable for yogis' bodies and conducive to developing a unified concentration of calm abiding and special insight. When he practiced here, a community of disciples gathered and it became established as a retreat center. His direct disciple, the great meditator Trinley Chophel, and his son, the young lama Sonam Gyaltsen, also stayed here for a long time and nurtured students. Later, Nyinchung Drubthob Ogyen Tenzin Rinpoche, who was born as the son of Shelri Chogtrul Orgyen Tenzin Rabgye, attained realization at this retreat center and became renowned. He extensively benefited beings through teaching Dharma, medicine, blessings, and prophecies to devotees gathered from both inner and outer Dolpo, Lo-Monthang, the northern plains of Upper Tibet, and as far as Mugu-Karmarong. In the interim, due to many adverse circumstances, it fell into ruin. Recently, Nyinchung Dungse Rinpoche has restored both the outer and inner supports and contents and is currently managing it.
