ISKCON Bhaktapur is taking Care of about 500 Years Old Jagannath Temple at Bhaktapur Near Durbar Square. The Jagannath temple is one of the most ancient temples present in Bhaktapur. Lord Jagannath along with this brother Balaram and Subhadra can be seen smilingly standing. Though known as Jagannath, they are in life size form as that in Dwarika, very opulently carved with jwelleries. The temple w
as inaugurated in 1600 B.S. exactly 473 years ago, according to its manuscript. The worship system was similar to that of Jagannath Puri. No salt were used for bhoga preparations. Festivals like Ratha Yatra, Maha Snanyatra, Yagnas, all were grandly celebrated. For many decades, the temple was closed all days long except for a quick morning puja by the traditional priests. So people were unaware of the beautiful deities housed inside. Even until three years back too, this temple used to be an open defecation zone, drug addict’s hub, and used to be heavily covered by high weeds growing all over the temple complex, and hardly any devotees visiting the temple complex. Till nearly a century ago, many big festivals were held in this temple. According to the local priest and some old people, there used to be rathyatra of Jagannath in Bhaktapur too, similar as that in Jagannath Puri, Orissa. This rathyatra used to be done on the same day when Puri rathyatra starts. There used to be small sized deities of Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra of about two feet height. The festival of Rathyatra was done putting them in the chariot. Huge crowd of people followed the Rathyatra possession. Delicious Jagannath Prasad was distributed to all the festival attendants. However, though the traditional Jagannath rathyatra was stopped, ISKCON Nepal has been organizing rathyatra in Bhaktapur annually since many years. By the mercy of Jagannath ji and Srila Prabhupada, since mid-jan 2014, the temple was given to be worshipped daily by the traditional priest family to ISKCON devotees in Bhaktapur. Since then their lordships Sri Sri Jagannath, Baladev, Subhadra and Shaligram silas are being daily worshipped with aaratis and bhogas. The traditional priest says, "Now the deities look much happier and the temple compound very clean". Everyone visiting the temple especially for the first time are awe-stricken seeing the beautiful forms of the lord. Mangal arati and all principle morning Programs and Jagannath Astakam is Daily recited. Saturday Program is held every week.
