Hi all - for anyone still looking for plans for the second seder, we'll be hosting another seder at the NIG Utrecht. Last year was amazing - we had people from 8 different countries, all ages (including kids, young adults, and up), and all over the Netherlands. This is a super warm community that we've been delighted to call home for the last 3 years. The synagogue is modern Orthodox, and the seder is open and casual.

Door open at 19:30
Start seider at 20:00
We'll be starting early to accommodate people of all ages, so we're going to use a slightly alternative order of the seder according to the NIK guidelines.

Deze dagen brengen het emotionele verleden altijd weer tot leven. Dat vinden wij belangrijk.
Op bracht het Utrechts Comité 4 Mei-Herdenking weer een krans naar het monument op onze begraafplaats, in aanwezigheid van een flinke groep belangstellenden.

Arnold Pappie woonde met zijn ouders en 2 broertjes op de Willem van Noortstraat. Hij werd op 4 mei 1943, morgen precies 80 jaar geleden, op transport gezet naar vernietigingskamp Sobibor. Drie dagen later was hij dood. Vermoord. Hij werd 13 jaar.

Op 4 mei 2023 denken we aan Arnold, een joods Utrechts jochie van de Willem van Noortstraat, en aan vele vele anderen. Opdat we niet vergeten.

As the years have passed, small communities in our region have been forced to merge with our community in Utrecht, due to dwindling membership in small towns. Obviously, the Second World War contributed to these developments. The Veenendaal jewish community was merged with our own many decades ago. At a distance of some 43 KM from our shul, it is on the outskirts of our community's catchment area. On the 4th of May, not coincidentally Dutch Remembrance Day, the volunteers that do such an excellent job in maintaining our cemetery there organized an open day. Among many others, two members of the ChristenUnie party, the largest in the municipal board, visited our cemetery in high winds and rain. They were met by board member Ruben van Praagh and his parents. They have a distant relative who is buried on site. Mr. Jaap Krocké, who co-ordinates the volunteers, presented their activities, and the only building on the premises, the tiny "Metaheerhuisje" soon to be renovated.
