Lions in the Road

My soul is among lions.
Psalm 57:4

In John Bunyan’s classic story, The Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian was traveling toward the Celestial City when he saw two lions on the road ahead of him. They were hungry and angry, and they appeared ready to attack and kill any passerby. Christian stopped in fear and studied them from a distance. Finally he saw they were both chained, one on each side of the road. Christian had a conversation with himself. He told himself not to be afraid of the lions, for if he stayed in the middle of the road they couldn’t hurt him. It was simply a test of his faith, he said. And in this way, he advanced. Though the lions roared on his left and right, they couldn’t touch him.

Psalm 57
From time to time on our journey through life, we pass down the same road. The lions are still there, and we’re apt to fear. But the trials of life are there to test and strengthen our faith. When we stay in the middle of God’s highway of holiness and advance forward, we are safe and we are strengthened.

When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply.

Fight or Flight!: Nehemiah
MARCH 20, 2021

Should such a man as I flee?
Nehemiah 6:11

Recommended Reading: Nehemiah 6:1-14

What Nehemiah was trying to do was tense and dangerous. He had returned to Jerusalem to lead the fledging Jewish community in rebuilding their city walls and creating a stronger presence. The territorial officials opposed this project, and they were determined to stop it even if they had to murder Nehemiah. They accused him, ridiculed him, and sought to intimidate him. Finally, Nehemiah received a message telling him to flee for there was a plot afoot to kill him that very evening.

“Should such a man as I flee?” Nehemiah said, as he stood his ground.

What did Nehemiah mean by that phrase? Did he mean, Such a strong man… or such a brave man… or such a well-protected man?

No. He meant, “Should such a man who is doing God’s work, living in His will, standing on His promises, and guarded by His grace flee?”

Nehemiah’s boldness didn’t come from his own resources. He knew his God—and the people who know their God will fight, not flee.

Oh my soul, put on Christ, and put off fear: put up prayer, and put down dread. From whom should such a man as I flee? Of whom should I be afraid?

Then He Arose

And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves…. Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:24, 26

Missionary Amy Carmichael often sent insights to her workers from her own daily devotions. One day she told them how she had been helped by two phrases in Matthew 8: And suddenly a great tempest arose…. Then He arose. She pointed out that when the storms arise, that’s when Jesus arises to deal with them.

Matthew 8: 23 – 27
“There are almost always waves,” Amy wrote. “Now and then we have times of quietness—little lulls, I used to call them—but far more often the wind is blowing from one quarter or another, and so there are waves…. But that is not the whole story.”

No, that’s not the whole story! The storms and the waves are a part of life; they arise. But our Lord also arises to deal with them, to help us, to protect and navigate us, to accompany us, to work on our behalf, and to turn the storms into streams of mercy.

When I am toiling in rowing, almost engulfed in the sea, make of the billows a pathway, come thro’ the darkness to me.

Leap of Faith

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6

Last year, an apartment building in France caught fire, trapping two brothers, aged three and ten, several floors above the ground. A crowd gathered, and the boys had to jump into the arms of those far below them. The older boy dropped his little brother into the crowd while thick, black smoke billowed from the apartment. Then the ten-year-old hesitated. The crowd yelled for him to jump, and, gathering all his courage, he leaped into the air. Both boys were caught, and neither was harmed.

Deuteronomy 31: 1 – 8
We never know when we’ll have to exercise sudden courage. When we put ourselves in the ten-year-old’s shoes, we wonder whether we’d have the courage to leap off a burning ledge. But God gives us courage like He gives us grace—just when it’s needed. If you’re facing something frightening, take courage. “Be strong and of good courage.” Don’t be afraid, for the eternal God is your refuge and underneath are His everlasting arms.

When your knees are knocking, it might help to kneel on them.

Fight or Flight!: The Sons of Reuben

They made war with the Hagrites…. And they were helped against them…for they cried out to God in the battle. He heeded their prayer, because they put their trust in Him.
1 Chronicles 5:19-20

Recommended Reading: 1 Chronicles 5:18-22

People who read through the Bible for the first time are often flummoxed when they come to First Chronicles because the first chapters are genealogies. But sprinkled throughout these chapters you’ll find people or groups commended for some virtuous feat. For example, in 1 Chronicles 5:18-22, we’re told the sons of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh were drawn into battle against the Hagrites. The Chronicler paused his record to tell us God helped these warriors because they cried to Him for aid in the battle. God heeded their prayer, because they put their trust in Him.

We all face battles in life, and the devil sends “Hagrites” our way. But we shouldn’t shrink from the conflict. The Bible likens us to soldiers (2 Timothy 2:3). Don’t fear or flee in the battles of life. Cry out to God in the battle and put your trust in Him. He heeds our prayers and gives the victory.

Outside of Christ, I have been defeated; in Christ, I am already victorious.

Defeating the Fear of Disease

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.
Revelation 21:4

Medical science has made it possible for humans to live longer. But ask the average senior citizen if that excites them and the answer may be, “Yes and no.” Yes, we want to live longer but not while battling a disease. Disease remains a potential source of fear for all humans, regardless of age.

Recommended Reading:
Romans 8: 37 – 39
But does it need to be? We know all of creation has been impacted by sin. When creation malfunctions or begins to break down, we shouldn’t be surprised. We know death is coming for all. But we need not be afraid of death or any disease that may hasten its arrival. Rather, we should echo the apostle John’s prayer: “I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health” (3 John 2). Health is a desire we should pray for and work toward, while leaving the answer to God.

One deadly condition we can eliminate today is fear! Fear is not from God (2 Timothy 1:7). Live well, pray well, and be well—one day at a time.

The destined end of man is not happiness, nor health, but holiness.

Your Words Are Heard

Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.
Daniel 10:12

During riots in Philadelphia last year, a Vietnamese church was set afire. Pastor Phillip Pham cried out, “God, please protect the hard drives.” The hard drives contained years of immigration paperwork, tax filings, and marriage documents. The church has a ministry of helping local residents with immigration matters. Arriving at the church, Pastor Pham saw the routers and modems destroyed, but the hard drives were untouched.[1]

Daniel 10: 1 – 14
Prayer is one of our greatest mysteries. We don’t fully understand its power, nor do we know why God values our prayers so deeply. We’re often unaware of the spiritual battles waged in the heavenly places because of our prayers, though we get a hint of the struggle in Daniel 10. But there’s no question about this—God hears our prayers and encourages us to pray to Him about everything.

The majority of us have very strong faith in Christ, but a minority, a few new believers, they need their faith to grow. Pray for their faith to take deep root in the love of God so they can be steadfast in Him—not focus on the problem, but focus on Jesus.

When Disasters Come

Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.
Romans 8:20-21, NLT

Nowhere on earth is truly safe. One couple moved from California to Missouri to avoid earthquakes only to be killed in a tornado. Natural disasters occur every single day—wildfires, earthquakes, floods, landsides, tornados, hurricanes, blizzards, and all the rest. On average, natural disasters kill 60,000 people globally each year. The Bible teaches that when Adam and Eve sinned, a curse fell over the earth (Genesis 3:17). Since then, the entire creation has groaned and labored as with birth pangs (Romans 8:22).

Recommended Reading:
Romans 8: 18 – 25
That’s why Jesus came, suffering at Calvary and rising from the dead. He came to free us from the curse of sin and to provide eternal protection from the disasters of life. One day He will create new heavens and a new earth, free from natural disasters, death, disease, drought, and sin.

Our God rules over every area of life, including natural disasters. We can trust Him who died for us and who will one day soon establish His new creation for all eternity.

The Bible presents both the reality of human suffering and death along with hope for a better future.

Gift Giving

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
2 Corinthians 9:15

One thing that parents often struggle with is giving their children gifts that not only give joy but will also last beyond a short season in their lives. Even something worthwhile, like a book, is designed for a specific reading level and age, so it will soon lose its value in the life of a child. Along with the desire to give something that will last, part of the joy is seeing the delight of their children when they receive the gift—and that is true of the gift God has given us as well. And His gift is “indescribable”!

Recommended Reading:
Matthew 7: 7 – 12
The Bible says that our Heavenly Father gives us the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23); the gift of salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8); and the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). James said, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). Romans 4:17 says, He “gives life to the dead,” and Romans 8:11 promises life to our mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells within us.

We serve a kind and gracious God who gives us good gifts, and the most indescribable is Jesus Christ Himself!

We can bring our little vessels to the spring and take them away filled to overflowing, and the exceeding abundance remains.

Ravenous for Revelation?

Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.
Jeremiah 15:16

Nutritionists warn that skipping too many meals can interfere with our body’s appetite and cause us to develop strong food cravings, especially for sugar and carbohydrates. The same thing can happen spiritually. If we begin skipping our regular time of personal Bible study, we might lose our healthy appetite and begin feeding our mind with mental junk food.

Recommended Reading:
Hebrews 5: 12 – 14
It’s normal for a healthy soul to crave a few morsels from the book of Proverbs, which are simple and easy to digest. Other times we need a long, slow, hot meal from Ephesians or Ezekiel. Are you ever hungry for the Sermon on the Mount? Thirsty for the worship of the Psalms? Ravenous for Revelation?

The entire Bible—Genesis to Revelation—is a pantry for the soul. It’s God’s menu for our mind and heart, manna for every morning and bread for every night. When we hunger and thirst for Scripture, God richly feeds and sustains us with His nourishing Word.

Dear Father, teach me to hold fast to the Word of life. Give me a hunger for Scripture and fill me with discernment and understanding so that Your truths will shine light into my daily walk.
