Sjana Tova! Een goed 5786!

Rosj Hasjana is het Joodse nieuwjaar. Het nieuwe jaar begint in de herfst en wordt als een geschikt moment gezien om een nieuwe start te maken.

Tijdens de Hoge Feestdagen - Rosj Hasjana en Jom Kipoer - zijn alle locaties van het Joods Cultureel Kwartier gesloten: op 23 en 24 september en 2 oktober.

The first image shows the Seder (made by the French engraver Bernard Picard, Den Haag, 1727-1738)

The Matzah inside the book on the right probably dates from the 19th century. It was discovered in the collection a couple of years ago.(Haggadah, Amsterdam, 1859)

Yesterday I took a walk to the Sephardic Cemetery Beth Haim in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. It was purchased as a burying ground by the Portuguese Jewish Community in 1614. Many famous rabbis and teachers of the seminary Ets Haim are buried here. For example Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657), the first Jewish printer of Hebrew in Amsterdam and chacham Isaac Aboab da Fonseca (1605-1693).

De collecties van de bibliotheek Ets Haim – Livraria Montezinos in oorlogstijd

In de Tweede Wereldoorlog probeerden de bestuurders van de Bibliotheek Ets Haim-Livraria Montezinos een deel van de bijzondere boeken en handschriften te verbergen voor de nazi's. In 1943 werd de hele bibliotheek alsnog in beslag genomen en naar Duitsland gebracht. Het grootste deel werd na de oorlog teruggevonden.

In de schatkamer van de Portugese Synagoge ziet u boeken en documenten die meer vertellen over de bibliotheek in oorlogstijd.

Dit is onderdeel van de dubbeltentoonstelling Beroofd over het verlies van Joods cultuurbezit in Nederland. De tentoonstelling is nog te zien tot en met 27 oktober in het Joods Museum en het Nationaal Holocaustmuseum.
