Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day! A good opportunity to draw our musical attention to one of the most famous female composers of all time:  holy German Benedictine abbess Hildegard von Bingen! Next to being a composer of religious music she was writer, philosopher, mystic and visionary.

September 17 marks the death anniversary of one of the most famous stars of the ancient music scene Hildegard von Bingen! The famous Benedictine abbess was born in 1098 and died on September 17, 1179. This album by the Psallentes ensemble, specialized in plainchant and Gregorian chants, is the first part of the complete recordings of the Dendermonde Codex: the complete works of Hildegard von Bingen. The music of Hildegard is a combination of devotional and spiritual chants.
We updated our Spotify playlist 'Ages of Gregorian Chant' with this beautiful album! 🎼👉Link in bio or check our Instagram Stories for the Spotify link.

The Tongeren collection of late mediaeval musical manuscripts is unique for several reasons. First, it is a complementary collection, with manuscripts that provide music for the hours as well as the Mass, and for both plainchant and polyphony. Second, the collection contains both of the two great families of plainchant musical notation: the square notation (black, square notes) and neumes (known as ‘Hufnagel notation’, as their shape resembled the nails [in German, ‘hufnagels’] used with horseshoes). From this rich and important collection, the Teseum (opened in June 2016) selected five musical sources. Four of these — two antiphonaries, a gradual and a processional — have been given the exposure and honour they deserve on this album by Psallentes.

Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame

The Messe de Nostre Dame is considered a milestone in medieval music history, and its creator a pioneer who pushed the boundaries of Ars Nova. Although Guillaume de Machaut is the first composer referred to by name to whom a four-part Mass ordinary can be attributed, it would still be wrong to call him an iconoclast: Machaut was building upon an age-old tradition, and spiced it up with the new rhythms and sound concepts of the mid-fourteenth century.
