Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
James 4:11
If we truly want to be like Jesus, we have to keep His one and only law: loving God and our neighbors the way we love ourselves. The moment we accepted Him as our Lord and Savior, He changed our hearts into the dwelling place for His Holy Spirit. We are temples of the Lord, our bodies, minds and souls belong to the One who created them. Everything we are testifies of our relationship with the Lord, of what His love has done in our lives. What we do reflects back on Him. When we speak, we do so as representatives of Jesus on earth. He is not only our example, He is also the one we answer to when we’re judged for everything we’ve done on this earth.
Every word that came out of Jesus’ mouth was nothing but the truth. At times, what He said was difficult to hear, at times it offended. It was divisive, had a sharp edge to it and was hard to swallow. But above all, it was true. And it was always motivated by holy, immeasurable love. He didn’t come to judge, His greatest objective was to save. Jesus was in a position to condemn others, because He alone was both human and without sin. But each and every time, He made the decision not to. He forgave and extended mercy.
Just like He chooses to forgive us and be merciful when we appear before Him ashamed and in need of grace.
When we speak, let’s remember our own need for Jesus and the sacrifice He offered in our place. We are not in any position to judge. Let’s multiply God’s mercy by extending it to others, by choosing discretion, and by being trustworthy in all our dealings. Love covers a multitude of mistakes and regrets, and binds believers together. Judging others for their wrongdoings merely divides and makes us arrogant in our own sin. We are no better or worse than anyone else, but when Jesus’ golden rule shapes our way of living, the Holy Spirit makes us more like Him.
