According to new data from the Cooperative Election Study, Generation Z is the first American generation in which Catholics outnumber Protestants. The 2023 analysis shows 21 percent of Gen Z identifying as Catholic, compared to 19 percent as Protestant, marking a historic reversal in U.S. religious demographics.
Catholic identification has remained relatively stable at around 20 percent across generations, while Protestant identification has declined sharply. Among the Silent Generation, nearly half identified as Protestant, a figure that has steadily fallen to under one-fifth among Gen Z.
There has never before been a period in U.S. history where Catholics outnumbered Protestants either nationally or within any single generation. The data highlights a significant transformation in American religious identity, especially among younger adults.
