According to new data from the Cooperative Election Study, Generation Z is the first American generation in which Catholics outnumber Protestants. The 2023 analysis shows 21 percent of Gen Z identifying as Catholic, compared to 19 percent as Protestant, marking a historic reversal in U.S. religious demographics.

Catholic identification has remained relatively stable at around 20 percent across generations, while Protestant identification has declined sharply. Among the Silent Generation, nearly half identified as Protestant, a figure that has steadily fallen to under one-fifth among Gen Z.

There has never before been a period in U.S. history where Catholics outnumbered Protestants either nationally or within any single generation. The data highlights a significant transformation in American religious identity, especially among younger adults.

Why Do Catholics Use Incense at Mass?

Incense has been used in worship for thousands of years, and in the Catholic Church, it holds deep symbolic and spiritual meaning. At Mass, incense isn’t just for tradition or ceremony—it’s a sacred sign pointing to higher realities.

First and foremost, incense symbolizes our prayers rising to Heaven. As the smoke ascends, it reminds us of Psalm 141:2—“Let my prayer be counted as incense before You.” It’s a visual representation of our spiritual offerings being lifted up to God.

Incense is also a sign of reverence and purification. It is often used to honor sacred objects: the altar, the Gospel, the Eucharist, and the faithful. By incensing these, the Church is recognizing the presence of the holy. When the priest incenses the congregation, it’s a reminder that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, and that our lives are meant to be a living sacrifice to God.

Biblically, incense is rooted in Old Testament worship. God commanded the use of incense in the Tabernacle (Exodus 30:7–9), and it was an essential part of temple rituals. The Book of Revelation also shows incense in heavenly worship: “The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God” (Revelation 8:4).

For Catholics, using incense at Mass connects us to heavenly worship, expressing the sacredness of what is happening at the altar. It stirs the senses and lifts the soul.

Next time you see incense rising at Mass, let your heart rise with it—offering your prayers, your life, and your love to God.

*PRESIDENT'S SPEECH AT THE HANDOVER CEREMONY ON THURSDAY 21ST MAY, 2020*

Peace be with you.
The National Association of Catholic Corps members (NACC) in Zaria diocese has been, is, and will continue to be a family of superfluous love, overwhelming inspiration and exhilarating happiness. It is the tensibility of our love that makes us great in Christ because it knows no boundary.
This administration was theoretically for 3 months but practically for 2 weeks; yet, the achievements were epoch-making. Thanks to all members and executives who glorified God with their time, finance and other resources.
The challenges we faced were egregious; but as it is said, "IT DOESN'T MATTER IF STONES ARE THROWN AT YOU, WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF THEM: A WALL or A BRIDGE". We were unable to hold our weekly rendezvous to communicate with each other because of the lockdown; consequently, we had to take NACC Zaria diocese to a digital era.
My sincere appreciation goes to God almighty for the customized wisdom He gave us for a time like this. Copious thanks also to our Chief shepherd, Bishop Jonathan Dodo and our unparalleled Chaplain, Rev. Fr. James Christopher for the constant spiritual refueling and guidance.
We cannot say 'thank you' enough to Prof. Edwin Ali and the host of supportive priests, patrons and patronesses; may the good Lord bless you and keep you safe for posterity.
I appreciate the alumni body for their full support to the association. To all the executives and serving corps members, I can only say that 'you are the best any president would have wished for'. There is no scale that can measure my gratitude to you all for your resilience and doggedness towards the growth of NACC Zaria diocese.
Thank you all; and God bless you.

NACC......Corps members for Christ.
