Faith Building—Making a bold move.
Text: Romans 10:17.

Examining faith as a concept is wide if one should take time carefully to study this theme. It is not in the interest of the writer to go into detail discussion on the subject of faith, but to look at some of the examples of how men and women of bible times have demonstrated their faith on various occasions. The only definition of faith I'll give is the one in Hebrews 11:1, which summarizes all we shall be discussing. According to Hebrews 11:1, faith is "Confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see"(NIV).
In Hebrews 11, the writer gives examples of many people in the old testament who expressed their faith in serving God. These include Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and Sarah. Based on their action, all of them had confidence in what they hoped for, all of them also had assurance of getting what they did not see at that material time. They did not doubt God, they believed God in totality, they were forward looking and always hopeful to get what God has promised to them. Specifically in this discussion, the writer is interested in talking briefly on making a bold move while building your faith. In Romans 10:17, the apostle Paul says "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God". When you hear the word of God, your faith can increase from one level to another. The word of God helps you to build your faith. You may be ignorant on many things in your relationship with God, but as you hear the word of God through several means, you can build your faith continuously. Yours can be dormant, but it can come alive when you are always in touch with the word of God. Faith building is a continuous one. The foundation of our faith is Jesus, but you can build on this foundation everyday in your life experience. We shall be talking in faith building as we go on in subsequent discussions because building a house starts from the foundation, and even after completing the house you would not stop maintaining the house as long as you stay in that house. In other words, apart from building your faith, you also maintain it. This is faith building. You build and maintain your faith through daily interactions with God in studying His words, prayers, etc.
Making a bold move while expressing your faith has to do with going into action or demonstrating your faith in order to get the results of what you hoped for. David had faith in God to kill Goliath. Apart from giving testimony of how God helped him to defend him and the animals he was taking care of and also telling Goliath how he will conquer him through God's power, David finally made a bold move by going in to action in demonstrating that faith when he picked stones and used one of the stones to kill Goliath. He did not waste time to face Goliath who was threatening God's people. His bold move brought the giant down and the name of God was glorified 1 Samuel 17:48-51. Remember that David's faith was in the Lord. At the appropriate time, he made a bold move by demonstrating his faith. This demostration of faith by David brought victory and joy to the nation of Israel.
Brethren, I know you have faith in the Lord, is it not time for you to demonstrate it? If your faith is hinged or connected to God's power, the Lord will not disappoint you.

Challenge: Make a bold move.

Attracting God's presence: Hannah's Strategies

In our previous lesson, we studied about God's presence with Joshua. Among other things, it was on record that Joshua was used by God in the crossing of the River Jordan and also in the conquest of Jericho. Joshua, with God's presence prayed and commanded the sun and the moon to stop moving in order to finish a particular assignment. We want to consider God's presence with Hannah, which brought out results to glorify God's name. We shall consider some strategies used by Hannah to attract God's presence, read 1Samuel 1:1 to 2:11
Going through the passage above, we can discover that there was a problem which was bugging Hannah, and she took some steps to address this problem by attracting God's presence (bringing God into the center of the problem), so good results came out. Hannah and Peninah were wife's of Elkanah, but because she did not bear children early, her mate ridiculed her, read 1Samuel 1:6. Why did God close her womb this time? Was it not a temporary closure? What strategies did Hannah use to attract God's presence?
She went to Shiloh to worship God with hee family members.
She spent more time to tarry before God to pour her heart (open) to God.
She was very sincere in her request to God.
She attached a vow to her prayers
She was supported by Priestly prayers
And she paid the vow
She worshipped God through Thanksgiving again.
Explanation
1... Hannah did not stay at home sorrowing for her problem always. she joined her family members to go to the place of worship, and that meant a lot for her and the Lord saw her heart during the time of worship.
2.... After the usual worship period, she stayed behind to persist in prayers by pouring her heart to God on what she desired, 1Samuel 1:10-15. She was deeply concerned about her problem and she poured her heart to only God who could answer her. This attracted good presence to her.
3.... Her sincerity was evidenced in the choice of words (though not fully recorded). Her persistency attracted the man of God to her. Think about this. When you're in God's presence making a request, how sincere are you in your prayers?
4.... In addition, she made a vow. It was not a selfish vow, because she told God that if she was blessed with a baby boy, she was willing to bring him for God's service. God saw the heart of Hannah through this vow, and this attracted more of God's presence to her in her request.
5.... When the priest, Eli, knew her intention, he supported her by uttering a word of prayer which attracted more of God's presence, 1 Samuel 1:17. Remember from the beginning, Hannah did not approach the Priest for prayers, zhe was interested in talking to God first about her deep desires in having a son. But when the Priest misunderstood her, she opened up, though she didn't give the Priest the details. This time, from her expression, she was fasting. We need the support of others, even spiritual fathers to join us as we pray and plead for God's intervention in our cases just as Abraham interceded for Lot, Genesis 18:22-33. Notice that Hannah was inside the tent of prayer and the Priest in charge was there watching her. If she didn't want the Priest to see her staying for such a long period of prayers, she would have left, but the Priestly prayer was an additional support to her own.
6.... When God finally blessed her with a son, and after weaning him for sometimes, she brought him to the house of God. Do we normally fulfil our vows to attract more God's presence?
7.... 2Samuel 2:1-11, Hannah worshipped God and blessed the name of the Lord for what He has done for her. The popular song "who is like unto thee" starts from verse 2. Sing this song aloud! Hannah discovered that the Lord, God Almighty is the only one to be worshipped, because there's none like unto Him. Let us worship God because of His greatness, and we shall attract more of His blessings and presence.. let us be sincere in our hearts as we pray to God always, so we can attract His presence. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!! Hallelujah!!!

GOD'S PRESENCE WITH JOSEPH

In our last discussion, we considered God's presence with Jacob. We noticed that the Abrahamic covenant was transferred to Jacob through his father, Isaac. Jacob enjoyed God's presence because his father and grandfather were already blessed. All we saw in Jacob was — fulfilling God's promise through his parents and this was not possible but for his divine connection with to them.

In this present discussion, we want to look at how Joseph enjoyed God's presence by divine arrangement.
Among the twelve son's of Jacob, Joseph became a unique person from our knowledge about him. He was chosen to fulfil an assignment, so all that happened to him through God's presence in his life was preparing him for greater heights. The rough and bitter background experience he had in his youthful age through his brothers turned out to bring something good to him and his family members (Gen 37:1-11). In this passage, it is clear that Jacob had special Iove for Joseph because he was born to him at his old age. The two separate dreams which are similar in nature which Joseph had also provoked envy from his brothers, though his father rebuked him but he kept in his mind the dream Joseph revealed to him. Here the writer of Genesis tells us about a special love that Jacob had for Joseph and the reason for this special love was given. Beyond the reason given, what do you think made Joseph to be chosen as a unique person from this youthful age? Don't you think he has already started gaining influence because of God's presence with him? Even though his relevance to the family has not been reviewed practically, but the two dreams he had were clear signs of God's way of making him to become relevant in his future life.

God works in mysterious ways. Whatever spiritual issue we find difficult to understand now may be revealed to us gradually If we patiently ask God to reveal the essence of what we are confused about. You and I cannot stop God from carrying out His assignment on those He has chosen to use. In v2 of the passage, it was recorded that he gave evil report about his brothers. Was this report an aligation or his brothers were really guilty of what he said about them. Reflect on this verse. Read Genesis 37:12-36.

Joseph was to be killed by his brothers but Ruben, the most senior brought another suggestion which stopped them from doing that. The suggestion by Judah finally prevailed and Joseph was sold to the Ishmaelites and he was finally sold to a rich man called Potipher in Egypt. Ruben's intervention and that of Judah cumulatively demonstrated God's presence with Joseph. Joseph couldn't have been killed by the first plan, neither could he have been rescued by Ruben by the second plan (only known to Ruben), because by divine arrangement he was to be sold to Egypt to fall in line with God's plan. Even Jacob mourned and wept for his son Joseph because they lied to him with the evidence of the coat being soaked in blood which suggested to him that his son was dead. Jacob refuse to be comforted and said he would mourn his son through out his life, but if he had thought about the dreams Joseph had and also believed that the dreams were from God, he would have had a second thought and perhaps prayed that God should reveal to him the lies and the wickedness of his other children.

Joseph's experience in Potipher's house and how he refused to be seduced by the wife and his sudden escape and his praising experience demonstrated God's presence with him (Genesis 39:1-20). Note that God's presence was with Joseph in all these experiences he had. Reflect.

Read Genesis 40:14-15. Joseph begged the person he interpreted the dream for to remember him as he was going back to Pharoah. The interpretation of the dream by Joseph shows God's presence with him. Genesis 41:14-49, Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharoah. Genesis 41: 41-57 tells us the record of how Joseph was made to be the second in command in Egypt (Genesis 42:7-24). Reflect on this passage. Has Joseph's dreams not become true? If God's presence is with you, it will lead you to your destination and fulfilment. Joseph finally revealed himself to his brothers Genesis 45:1-11. Joseph told his brothers that God sent him before them in order to save a generation. Even though the method they used was not good from human perspective, but those dreams finally became a reality. God's plan can be revealed to us through dreams and His presence will be associated with that plans to bring them to fulfilment. In chapter 46, Jacob finally left for Egypt. Joseph was used to deliver this generation from hunger, because God's presence was with him. Though the Israelites stayed in Egypt for about 430 years before finally leaving for Canaan land through Moses, but where it not for Joseph's presence in Egypt by God's design, Israel and it's descendants perhaps would have suffered untold hardship because of the famine that came on the land for such a long period. Note: you may pass through rough times and experience bitterness as you work for the Lord, but with God's presence we shall reach our goals.

REFLECTION..
Have you had any dream or vision and you're convinced that it is from God? Please, wait patiently for it's fulfilment.

GOD'S PRESENCE WITH JACOB — THE RELEVANCE OF HIS FATHER'S BLESSING.

Read Gen 28:1–9. In this passage, his father, Isaac, called him and blessed him before sending him to his uncle. What Isaac told Jacob was connected to God's promise to Abraham, his father. Isaac was aware of God's presence with his father through the covenant relationship. He was also aware of God's presence with himself (Isaac), so he transferred the same blessings to his son, Jacob, which was the initiative of God. In other words, Jacob was enjoying God's presence because of the connection he had with Isaac and Abraham, who were chosen by God for blessing. Reflect on this passage very well.

Similarly, the experience of Jacob from verses 10–22 in chapter 28 confirmed what his father told him. Read the passage and discuss. Take note of verse 15. That verse is a clear expression of God's continuous presence with Jacob. As believers in Christ, we are already a chosen generation, and just like Jacob, we are supposed to enjoy God's presence always. God has promised us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Amen. The Lord has not forsaken us, neither has He forgotten what concerns us. Because we are His children, we shall always enjoy His presence. Read Isaiah 49:14–16. Let us reflect on Genesis 28:15 “And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” Here, God told Jacob of His continuous presence with him all the day of his life.

Recall that Jacob was given specific assignment by God. God assured him of His presence even as He did same to Abraham, his grandfather. Note that God cannot give you an assignment and leave you alone. You and I are chosen by God. The Lord will not leave us alone no matter the challenges that may come to us brethren, use Genesis 15:15 to pray as you are led.

Take note of this:
• We have covenant with God because of our faith in Jesus, so our lives are preserved and protected.
• It is possible for you to enjoy God's presence which may be transferred to you by your parents who know God or men of God whom we work with.
• God does not fall in fulfilling his promises to us no matter the long period of waiting.

GOD'S PRESENCE—NOAH'S EXAMPLE. Genesis 6:1-14.

Going through the passage above, it was clear that God was not happy with the people that lived at that time because of the evil things they were doing. However, an individual, Noah, was singled out to be favoured because God's presence was with him. Who were the Nephilim?

It was glaring that God regretted creating human beings because they turned against God (Verses 6-7). It seems that Noah made up his mind to seek earnestly for God ; so, he started enjoying God's presence, and therefore he was given an assignment which would help protect his life and his family (Genesis 6:13-22).
God reduced the age limit of man to 120 years because he fell short of His presence and glory through violence, wickedness, and all kinds of evil. Noah and his family members were promised protection by God because Noah sincerely sought to do the right thing (Genesis 6:9). This implies that righteous living attracts God's presence.

The writer of Genesis repeatedly talked about Noah's righteous living. He was indeed compensated by this act of righteousness by escaping from the destruction by flood that came upon the earth. The ark which he made was the means of his safety and his family members, including other animals. This implies that God can bless other family members, protect and preserve them if an individual who is the leader makes himself available for God's use. God can save a generation of people because of one person, who has made up his mind to be faithful to God or who wants to always please God or is dedicated to God. Enjoying God's presence attracts multiple blessings. Read Genesis 7:1-7. God can provide a way of escape from evil for us if we earnestly desire to please Him. Noah was 600 years old when he made the ark for his security. Read Genesis 8:1-22, and have a brief discussion.

The altar that Noah raised in verse 20, is it for thanksgiving? What do we learn from this? Just as we said in our previous discussion, the Old Testament believers were used to raising altars to help them have frequent fellowship with God. Frequent worship and fellowship with God from our hearts attracts God's presence. Noah did not forget what the Lord had done for him and his family. Therefore, immediately he came out of the ark, he raised an altar to God where he performed sacrifices to thank God for keeping him alive and his family members. What is the essence of performing sacrifices always on altars? Today, we can also enjoy God's presence if we submit to the will of God totally, and also cultivate a heart like that of Noah. Let us remind ourselves that Noah was singled out to be favoured and to be used by God because he made up his mind to be on the side of Yahweh.

PRAYER
Let us ask God to give us the heart of Noah so we can enjoy His presence always and be a source of liberation and blessing to others in our generation.

Identifying Locations for God's Presence

God is not like an object, like wood, which can be kept in one place so that people can feel His presence there. However, we can create a space or a particular location where we can come frequently, either as an individual or as a group, to render services to God or to call on His name.

In other words, God is everywhere, but we can create a place of fellowship with Him in a more organized way. We shall consider a few examples of places or locations from the scriptures where people “meet” God to have fellowship with Him, either through prayers or other services.

Altar – Genesis 12:6–9
In the scriptures stated above, we can see how Abraham built altars in two places. After receiving the call of God and leaving his own country, he finally arrived in the land of Canaan. Firstly, in the region of Shechem, he built an altar to the Lord. Secondly, in the region of Bethel, he also built an altar for the Lord.

Altars can be used as a place specifically designed to have fellowship with God. They can be used temporarily or for a fairly longer period. It is a place designed to commune with God secretly or openly. Read Genesis 12:8 again. What are the things involved specifically when one dedicates himself to call on the name of the Lord?

We can erect, build, or design altars in our homes where we feel more of God's presence or where we enjoy God's glory as we tarry in His presence. When we talk of family altars, what do we really mean? Discuss...

Can you use your bedroom or parlor as an altar? Which one is more convenient?

One fact we must emphasize is that God's presence should not elude us anywhere we erect or design for fellowship with Him as an altar. Do we have altars without God's presence?

Any altar created by the worshiper with the intention of serving the living God will, no doubt, attract the full presence of God. When the worshiper notices God's presence, he can stay there for a long period to fellowship with God. Why? Because he enjoys the presence of God.

Read John 4:20–24. The first altar or place of worship, ideally, should be from the heart, based on the words of Jesus to the Samaritan woman. The Samaritans erected a rival temple on Mount Gerizim when their brothers, the Jews, denied them from coming to Jerusalem to fellowship in the temple. Jesus tells us here that there is a spiritual altar, which comes from the heart, where God's presence dwells more.

Cf. Psalm 91:1–2. Take time to discuss this.
Note:
Just like the altar which is erected for worship and prayers, the temple in O.T. and N.T. and even sinagogues were all designed for the same purpose of prayers, teaching the word of God, worship, etc, etc. Before King Solomon built a temple for the Lord, his father, David, was the one that first conceived the idea. For several reasons, he could not build the temple, but he already prepared the ground for Solomon to build it. He got a lot of materials needed for the building of the temple before his death.
Solomonic temple was built in Jerusalem. Priests were always there to attend to the needs of the people. The high priest was the most senior. In the time of Jesus, the name of the high priest was Caiaphas. John 11:49-53.
The temple was in one place. The inner apartment of the temple was called Holy of Holies, where God's presence was felt in greater dimension. In the O.T. the ark of the Lord which was the symbol of God's presence was kept in the temple. The written law, the ten Commandments or the Decalogue was hidden inside the ark among other things. Do you remember the story of Uzzah who died because he touched the ark when he was not worthy to do so (1 Chronicles 13:9-10)? What does that imply?
The ark again, is the embodiment of God's presence. What is the significance of this ark? Some churches have carved out specific places as altars in the church auditorium, where nobody goes there anyhow except the few church leaders, and in some cases, only the Bishop incharge may step into that area, because it is believed that God's presence prevails more in that area.
In the temple, especially in the O.T. times, the high or chief priest goes into the Holy of Holies to perform religious rights once in a while. This could happen even once in a year, that is on the day if attonment (yomkipur). On this occasion, before the priest moved into the Holy of Holies, he had to perform all kinds of sacrifices to qualify him to perform those rights. Even then before he moved into the Holy of Holies, something like strong rope or chord was tied around his waist, with a bell clanging as he moved from one place to another. If he was not qualified or not neat before he enters the Holy of Holies, and he died there, it was that long rope tied to his waist people would use to drag the body out. This clearly implies that the inner apartment (Holy of Holies) had more of God's presence. Do we have Holy of Holies today in our churches? In the story of the Samaritan woman and Jesus, where Chirst said "the worshiper now worships from the heart and spirit". John chapter 4, Christ emphasized that true worshipers are those who worship from their hearts.
When Christ was crucified, the curtain that prevented people from entering the Holy of Holies was torn into two (Luke 23:44-46). This implies that apart from the priest or pastors, any believer can assess God's presence in the present dispensation.

Questions...
Where do we see as the present temple in our day?
If we see our hearts as the ideal temple, then why do we gather for fellowship in a large auditorium?
What are the processes of enjoying God's presence everyday?
Read 2 Chronicles 5:1-14 and also chapter 6:12-42. What are the implications of Solomon's prayers? Why should the temple be decorated in such a manner? Does God stay in a temple?
Read John 15:1-5. Discuss briefly on these scriptures.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD

1. The Spirit of God. Genesis 1:1-2.
The spirit of God also is the embodiment of the presence of God. From the text above, it is clear that God's spirit was floating (moving around) on the formless earth. It is not possible to see God physically now, but we enjoy His presence through the presence of His spirit. In other words, even at creation (in the beginning of the creative work of God), His presence was already felt. In the new testament we hear more of the Holy Spirit of God who dwells amongst us as the comforter, advocate, testifier and playing the role of leadership. John 14:16-18. You can also experience God's presence through the spirit of God who is always with you, assuring you as a true believer and also giving you boldness to approach Him politely as your father. Romans 8:14-15.
Are you a believer? Do you always feel God's presence through your inner conviction of the Holy Spirit inside of you?
How do you approach God while praying? Is it through flesh or through the power of the Holy Spirit?

2. Through Prophetic Vocation.
Prophets who were chosen and sent by God in O.T and N.T are carriers of God's presence and messages. God's presence can be felt practically through the lives and works of the Prophets. Jeremiah 1:1-8. Jeremiah did not choose himself, It was God who chose him, so His presence was with him and it was the word God gave him he was going to deliver to His people. Isaiah 1:1 and 6:6-8. Isaiah also was called by God and giving a message to the people of God. When God chose Isaiah, His presence was with him. He was not in a perfect condition when he was called (Isaiah 6:5), but God cleansed him and commissioned him for the work He has given to him to do. Before Christ was born, God used many prophets to speak to His people and they all experienced His presence. What of today? Do we see prophets abiding in God's presence as they speak? Discuss.
Why do we have false prophets in the O.T and N.T times? Discuss.

Isaiah for example has 3 major messages
1. Warning the nation to obey the covenant before the exile.
2. The condition of Jews in exile
3. Hope for those redeemed after exile.

Amos 1:1. Amos was another prophets chosen by God, who also felt His presence in his vocation. He was the prophet of 8th century B.C. He was a great reformer. He spoke a lot on justice and fair play, challenging judges to do the right thing and calling on the society to abide by the moral obligations given by Yaweh. Amos 5:10-14. The above scriptures tell us more about the moral obligations Amos was sent to pursue. He was indeed the prophet of morality. God's presence was with him. Through God's presence, he saw the needs of the people and addressed the appropriately. Even today, we have the moral obligation to address the needs of society and speak God's mind in all ramifications. If God's presence is with you, you will not be afraid to speak the truth.
All the prophets were fully aware of the covenant relationship God established with Israel. Their messages were hinged on Yaweh and the covenant. The prophets were historians, revivalists, role models, oretors, who were teachers of the law of God. As they experience God's presence, they taught on the following among others:
1. The sovereignty of God.
2. The righteousness of Yaweh.
3. The judgement of God.
4. The obligations of the covenant and
5. The Messianic expectation.
In breif discussion, x-ray the messages of prophets in modern times.
What is the yardstick for measuring messages of prophets that carry God's presence?

THE NATURE OF GOD'S PRESENCE

God’s presence can manifest in many ways. Sometimes, it appears through fire or the appearance of angels, as seen in Exodus 3:1–4. Read the passage carefully and reflect on how God revealed Himself to Moses through the burning bush. Below are several ways God reveals His presence in the Scriptures:

1. Through His Voice
God often makes His presence known by speaking directly to individuals.
Genesis 3:9–10 God spoke to Adam and Eve in the Garden.
Genesis 12:1–3 God called Abraham to leave his country for Canaan land
Genesis 17:1–5 God appeared to Abraham and made a covenant with him.
Acts 9:3–6 Jesus spoke to Saul on the road to Damascus.

2. Through Angels
God also reveals His presence through angelic visitations.
Acts 10:3–6 An angel appeared to Cornelius.
Exodus 3:2 The Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in the burning bush.
Luke 1:8–13 An angel brought good news to Zechariah.
Genesis 19:1–3 Angels visited Lot in S***m.

3. Through Miraculous Signs and Wonders
Going through the Bible, God’s presence is demonstrated through powerful miracles.
In Exodus, God used Moses to perform many signs and wonders before leading the Israelites out of Egypt.
One major miracle was the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14), a clear demonstration of God’s power and presence.
God also provided manna and quail from heaven to sustain His people in the wilderness.
In the New Testament, Jesus and His disciples performed many miracles, healing the sick, raising the dead, and demonstrating God’s glory. (John 9; Acts 3:1–7).
Miracles reveal God’s power and affirm His existence. Even today, God manifests His presence through signs and wonders, inspiring people to praise and worship Him. For example:
In John 9, the healing of the blind man demonstrated God’s presence and power to the Jews and to the man himself.
In John 2, Jesus turned water into wine at Cana, showing His divine ability to meet human needs.

4. Through Animals and Angels
Numbers 22:25–35 describes a unique encounter between Balaam, his donkey, and the Angel of the Lord.
God spoke through Balaam’s donkey before opening Balaam’s eyes to see the angel. This account shows that God can use any means to reveal His presence, even animals to correct, guide, or protect us. Balaam was walking in disobedience, but God intervened to redirect him. This story reminds us not to underestimate God’s methods, for He has unlimited ways of making His presence known.

5. Through Visions
Another way God reveals Himself is through visions.
Acts 10:1–4 Cornelius, though not yet converted, saw a vision from God.
Isaiah 1:1 Isaiah saw a vision before he was fully commissioned as a prophet.
A vision is a supernatural revelation or message from God, often given for guidance, correction, salvation, or a specific assignment. Throughout the Scriptures, many individuals experienced visions from God. These divine encounters show that God can reach anyone, regardless of their spiritual status, to fulfill His purpose.

Reflection:
God’s presence is not limited to one form or method. He can reveal Himself through His voice, angels, miracles, animals, or visions. As believers, we must remain sensitive to His presence and open to the various ways He might choose to communicate with us.
